Poke Rafferty was writing offbeat travel guides for the young and terminally bored when Bangkok stole his heart. Now the American expat is assembling a new family with Rose, the former go-go dancer he wants to marry, and Miaow, the tiny, streetwise urchin he wants to adopt. But trouble in the guise of good intentions comes calling just when everything is beginning to work out.

Richard Delman says: "Ever been to Bangkok?"

Best narrator I can ever remember listening too. His voices of the characters makes them come alive and you believe they really exist and have real lives. The subject matter may be hard for some. It is gritty novel of perversion in Thailand. For those of us who have spent some time in Asia, we can relate to third world societies, corruption and poverty all condoned by the ruling elite. I will definitely be reading the sequels.

At 24 years of age, U.S. Army Ranger Sean Parnell was named commander of a forty-man elite infantry platoon - a unit that came to be known as the Outlaws - and was tasked with rooting out Pakistan-based insurgents from a mountain valley along Afghanistan's eastern frontier. Parnell and his men assumed they would be facing a ragtag bunch of civilians, but in May 2006 what started out as a routine patrol through the lower mountains of the Hindu Kush became a brutal ambush.

In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved. Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box", the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together.

Would you try another book from Michael Connelly and/or Michael McConnohie?

    Connelly-yes. McConnohie-No.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Good. Typical Bosch detective story ending.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Michael McConnohie?

    Dick Hill or Len Cariou.

Was The Black Box worth the listening time?

Yes and no. Story was Ok and probably was very good but the narrator ruined a much anticipated listen. Narrator's innotation was like listening to someone read a cook book. His characters were less than inspiring. A Bosch novel needs a certain noir feeling and this guy couldn't do it.

    Any additional comments?

If you are a Bosch fan, I suppose you will listen to it but don't expect much.

Life as a ship's boy aboard HMS Dolphin is a dream come true for Jacky Faber. Gone are the days of scavenging for food and fighting for survival on the streets of 18th-century London. Instead, Jacky is becoming a skilled and respected sailor as the crew pursues pirates on the high seas. There's only one problem: Jacky is a girl. And she will have to use every bit of her spirit, wit, and courage to keep the crew from discovering her secret.

I have now finished 4 of the Bloody Jack series and cannot put them down. Even tho they are intended for young adults, they are so entertaining and imaginable to keep even this 64 year old engaged. Sheer fun. Never a dull moment. The narrator is great, too.

Easy Rawlins, L.A.'s most reluctant detective, comes home one day to find Easter, the daughter of his friend, Christmas Black, left on his doorstep. Easy knows that this could only mean that ex-marine Black is probably dead, or will be soon. But Easter's appearance is only the beginning, as Easy is immersed in a sea of problems.

Why we think it’s a great listen: A performance so poignant, we gave Bronson Pinchot (yes, Balki from Perfect Strangers) our inaugural Narrator of the Year award.... In the monsoon season of 1968-69 at a fire support base called Matterhorn, located in the remote mountains of Vietnam, a young and ambitious Marine lieutenant wants to command a company to further his civilian political ambitions. But two people stand in his way.

Absolutely one of the best fiction war novels I have ever read. Outstanding narration. A page turner that will keep you up at nite or sitting in the car listening well after you get home. Gripping and compelling story full of action and angst. The story of a Marine Company in Vietnam coming to grips with the social conflicts of the time and death in a grossly mishandled war by inept political leadership from President Lyndon Johnson. I know. I was there. I was somewhat disappointed by the ending, not that the ending was bad but just not realistic. As an Army Officer of 21 years (without giving anything away), I believe an investigation and charges would have been filed immediately.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

It has always amazed me at the creulty humans inflict on each other and how the human body and mind can endure, survive and conquer. A truely unbeliveable story of war and survival. Another similiar book, I recommend, if you like these kind of stories is "Tears in the Darkness". I have a short review there, also.

Could you survive on your own, in the wild, with everyone out to make sure you don't live to see the morning? In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by 12 outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

For the first four months of 1942, U.S., Filipino, and Japanese soldiers fought what was America's first major land battle of World War II, the battle for the tiny Philippine peninsula of Bataan. It ended with the surrender of 76,000 Filipinos and Americans, the single largest defeat in American military history. The defeat, though, was only the beginning, as Michael and Elizabeth M. Norman make dramatically clear in this powerfully original book.

This was a sometimes depressing read that made me angry. My Mom had a high school boyfriend who survived the Japanese death camps and he was never the same again. She hates the Japanese to this very day. Maybe it isn't a good idea to hate anymore but we should never forget.

A good Bosch novel but could only give it 3 stars because the reader could not do the voices or the semi dark and gritty nature of the series.
