The narrator captured me more than the story itself. I felt like I was listening to one of my grandmother's tales. The story was well written. The author did an amazing job capturing the way of life of the time. The individuality of the characters helped me follow the story and understand what life was really like for the people of that time. I felt the joy and the pain of the characters. I really needed to hear this story and it has me hungry for more. This story fed my soul.
I've seen the movie several times throughout my life and every time I feel new emotions. The story and narration of this book put me over the edge and challenged me in every way possible. Now, I know the history and truths goes deeper than this story reveals, however, I still found myself there from the very beginning. I appreciate how the book tells the story of Kunta's life in Africa up until manhood, something the movie doesn't share. The narration was awesome! I felt the fear in the mother's voice, the pain in the men and women who suffered the treachours reality of being captured, treated like animals, and raped over and over again. I was there in the fields, the shacks, the celebrations. It amazed me how through it all the men and women continued to smile and thank God for life. Sometimes in life we need a reality check and this story definitely does the job. We cannot run from our history nor be ashamed or embarrassed. Instead, we need to embrace our history, love our culture and where we come from, and establish the confidence to want to seek more.
I dont know if I should be admitting this but I am, this was my first Maya Angelou book. I mean, I remember reading this book in early grade school but as a child I could have never grasped the meaning. Reading this story now as an adult I appreciate her honesty. Her narrative tone placed me by her side. I walked with her, laughed with her, hurt with her, and hugged her. This story took me to the place when I questioned my placement in the world and my natural beauty. I applaud Maya Angelou for being ever so brave to share her story. This story has encouraged me to always remain true to myself, seek the guidence of the Lord , and never never lose my faith. Thank you for writing this story.
Heroes usually fight crime not zombies, which made this story uniquely different. I appreciate how the author created original heroes with original super hero powers. The author did lose me a couple of times and I had to re-listen to some parts. The narrator was fun to listen to and captured each character's personality well.
Awesome book! The suspense, twists and turns had me on the edge of my seat. The narrator did a good job capturing the mood of the story and the characters. I really enjoyed the story and the narrator and I'm looking forward to listening to more books by this author.
This was my first zombie story ever and I L.O.V.E. it! The narrator was awesome and I'm looking forward to listening to all the other books. I heard some zombie stories were complex, but not this one. The author did an awesome job incorporating real life and reality into this story and at times I felt like I was there. This story had me on the edge of my seat the entire time!
I don't think I've ever read a book that was so erotic. I listened to this book at work over a span of 3 days and I found myself looking over my shoulder to see if anyone could hear what I was hearing. The story was nothing like what I was hearing and I'm glad I checked it out for myself. I absolutely did not like the narrator. She was so dry and read the entire story in a monotone voice. I was expecting some excitement at some point from her but never got it and it almost makes me regret listening to this story. I totally feel like I didn't get as much as I should have from the story because I was so irritated with her voice. So annoying! Being that this was my very first audio book ever I was nervous that all narrators read like her. I haven't purchased the second book because of this issue I have with the narrator and if I do decide to continue on with the story I would rather purchase the book and read it myself.
