I love Amy Tan books, but this was a disappointment. It is hard to stay with and just sort of off. I'll always continue to follow Amy Tan, but I wish I had not bought this audio book.
I loved the narration. The narrators fit the characters beautifully.
Lisa See and Amy Tan are two of my favorite authors. I have to admit I have hundreds of great authors that I also love. I actually enjoyed this book more on the second listen. It really is like the layers of an onion and many books worth reading are deeper after the first read or listen.
This book was not time well spent. It could have had a much more satisfying middle and ending. V.C. Andrews seemed to lose her train of thought and began taking the reader from one direction to another, culminating it a troubling ending...
I would have either given Kathy rich, satisfying vengeance or made peace and given the characters a happy ending.
My favorite scene was when Kathy and Chris found out that it was their mother who was trying to kill them with the poisoned donuts.
Becca Batloe was a poor choice for this book. She sounds whiney and slow. This book needs an intelligent sounding woman and a MAN for Christopher. I couldn't listen to it... It ruined my memory of the book that I read. I hope it is rerecorded with higher quality artists.
When I READ the book, the sex scenes. Unfortunately, I couldn't listen to this for over an hour.
The book is full of grammatical errors and poor sentence structure. I have never read an erotic book before, and hope to see more that are designed for women. The real book was a secret pleasure.
Sharing a great story is always a pleasure, and Snow Flower and the Secret Fan is just such a story. It really is an in depth look at life in China from a woman's perspective in the early 1800's. Women were considered nothing, but as mother's of males, they were critical. This book gives you such insight into the lives of women and the importance of friendship is a major theme. Considering how isolated our society has become, it is interesting to see that the Chinese culture made sure women always had a small group that would stay with you for the different periods in life - childhood, marriage, widowhood.
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan could be compared to some of Amy Tan's books as well as Dreams of Joy by Lisa See.
Snow Flower was my favorite character in this book because she made the most of what life gave her. She was also multi-dimensional and fun!
This book is too long to listen to in one sitting unless you are on a long trip and need to stay awake. This is a book to savor over several days.
I would recommend, Cold Sassy Tree, to anyone who just wants to get lost in an entertaining story. One of my favorites!
Tom Parker brings a sense of authenticity to the story that is enhanced by his accent.
Great Read! It's easy to just listen and immerse yourself into a simpler time and place. All time classic!
Ken Follet is a genius as a story teller. You care about the characters, you hate some, love some, and see human nature at its finest and lowest. It is amazing to see how no matter what, human nature stays the same. The CEO's of large corporations, Drug Lords, and those trying to reach the top, are the Popes, Kings and Knights of yesteryear.
I enjoyed every minute of this. I read Pillars of the Earth first and fell in love with Follett's ability to tell a great story and put it all in great historical context. He writes of rich characters with all of man's faults and highest aspirations.
