In a time long forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons off balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. As the cold returns, sinister forces are massing beyond the protective wall of the kingdom of Winterfell. To the south, the king's powers are failing, with his most trusted advisor mysteriously dead and enemies emerging from the throne's shadow.

    Overall

The greatest fantasy series that I have ever read/listened to. Martin is a master of the gendre, his writing sheer genius. One problem I often have with fantasy is that much of it becomes rather predictable. Martin's novels are so full of plot twists that he often leaves one's head spinning (I don't know how many times I have said to myself "did that really just happen?"). This story has it all, political intrigue, epic battles, mystery, betrayal, honor, love lost, love gained- all described in gritty, exacting detail, and tinged with a touch of the fantastic. King Arthur on steroids if you will. Fans of Tolkien, Jordan, Hobb, Feist, Weiss & Hickman, etc, will love this story- and if you have never read a drop of fantasy in your life, I couldn't recommend a better jumping off point.
