Martin Gilbert, the official biographer of Winston Churchill, offers a complete history of World War II. It began with the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. By the time it came to an end on V-Day - August 14, 1945 - it had involved every major power, and had become global in its reach. In the final accounting, it would turn out to be - in both human terms and material resources - the costliest war in history, taking the lives of forty-six million people.

Would you try another book from Martin Gilbert and/or Bernard Mayes?

    probably not

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Second World War?

    too many to recall

What does Bernard Mayes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    nothing

What character would you cut from The Second World War?

    all were necessary

    Any additional comments?

very disappointed....90% of the book was concentrated on europe and the nazi...if memory serves me correctly...there was a lot of "war" in the pacific....but the author writes about the pacific in almost an afterthought.....i'm sorry about the horrible happenings in europe...especially toward the jews and the final solution......but just as much horror was in the pacific......too bad the writer chose to ignore that

What if you had carte blanche to fight evil? Nothing held back, nothing off the table. What would you do? For decades, the world has been fighting the drug cartels, and losing, their billions of dollars making them the most powerful and destructive organizations on earth. Until one man is asked to take charge. Paul Devereaux used to run Special Operations for the CIA before they retired him for being too ruthless. Now he can have anything he requires, do anything he thinks necessary. No boundaries, no rules, no questions asked.

Many regard Muhammad Ali simply as 'The Greatest' heavyweight of all time. Others admire his battles against racial injustice and religious intolerance. A few just call him 'Dad'. They are all here in this book - 50 men and women of note coming together to celebrate the man Sports Illustrated crowned 'Sportsman of the Century': Angelo Dundee, Ali's trainer; Billy Crystal, actor; Sir Henry Cooper, former British and European heavyweight champion; Bert Sugar, journalist and boxing historian; and more.

Knocking off a bank or an armored truck is merely crude. Knocking off an entire republic has, I feel, a certain style." His memory is blank. He only knows that he was flushed out of the Mediterranean Sea, his body riddled with bullets. There are a few clues. A frame of microfilm surgically implanted beneath the flesh of his hip. Evidence that plastic surgery has altered his face. Strange things that he says in his delirium -- maybe code words. Initials: "J.B." And a number on the film negative that leads to a Swiss bank account, a fortune of four million dollars, and, at last, a name: Jason Bourne.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

Then, the unspeakable: a night of chaos and carnage gives way to sunrise on a nation, and ultimately a world, forever altered. All that remains for the stunned survivors is the long fight ahead and a future ruled by fear—of darkness, of death, of a fate far worse.

What disappointed you about The Passage?

the lesson learned was to research a bit more before buying a book...I thought this would be a book about survival in a world gone upside down...not a book about the takeover of the world by zombies....book couldn't seem to make up it's mind between science fiction or the real world....I wanted to read about something that could "potentially" happen....not about some fantasy blood sucking "Virals".....

What was most disappointing about Justin Cronin’s story?

just couldn't keep track of who was what and what they were trying to do

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of the narrators?

scott brick is one of the best...maybe the main reason I bought the book.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    disappointment and very boring....

    Any additional comments?

unless you are into zombies....stay away...I buy very long books to listen to while I walk 3-4 hours a day....a good book will make the time and miles fly by....this book was just the reverse...the more I listened...the longer the miles became and the longer they seem to take...
