    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 26 mins)
    • By George Orwell
    • Narrated By Simon Prebble
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

Customer Bob says: "Great Book, With an Amazing Narrator"
    "Better than the real thing"

If you were to read this as an actual book, you would miss out, this audiobook is that good. The narration is perfect; it's bone-chilling. This book is frightening, profound and incredibly relevant.

  • Lucky Jim

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 38 mins)
    • By Kingsley Amis
    • Narrated By Paul Shelley

Jim Dixon has accidentally fallen into a job at one of Britain's new redbrick universities. A moderately successful future in the History Department beckons if he can survive the probationary year. Not the least of his problems is the necessity to keep in with his eccentric Professor Welch, who although detested and despised by Jim, has sufficient influence in the faculty to affect the continuation of his appointment.

    Kelley says: "An outstanding novel"
    "It's no Catch-22"

I read this in the hopes of a Catch-22-like experience. It was far from it. Not a bad book, but never hilarious--just very slightly funny, if that.

  • The Reluctant Fundamentalist

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 38 mins)
    • By Mohsin Hamid
    • Narrated By Satya Bhabha

At a cafe table in Lahore, a bearded Pakistani man converses with a suspicious, and possibly armed, American stranger. As dusk deepens to night, he begins the tale that has brought them to this fateful meeting. Changez is living an immigrant's dream of America. At the top of his class at Princeton, he is snapped up by Underwood Samson, an elite investment firm. He thrives on the energy of New York. But in the wake of September 11, he finds his position in his adopted city suddenly overturned.

    Vahe Kassardjian says: "Disappointed"
    "Engrossing but Unsettling"

There is a lot about this book that is very honest, in terms of the feelings some people have towards this country. And I think it's worth reading--hopefully by mentally balanced individuals.

That said, I hope that none of this book's many admirers take it as justifying or rationalizing terrorism. We all agree that being happy about the killing of innocent people, just because you're uncomfortable with the way their country operates, is not ok, right??? I find the book's ambiguity on that question pretty unsettling.

  • Let the Great World Spin

    • UNABRIDGED (15 hrs and 16 mins)
    • By Colum McCann
    • Narrated By Richard Poe, Gerard Doyle, Carol Monda, and others
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

A Pushcart Prize-winning author and contributor to the New Yorker, the Atlantic Monthly, and GQ, Colum McCann is renowned for his carefully constructed character studies. No exception, Let the Great World Spin follows the fortunes of a menagerie of New Yorkers through a day in 1974 - the day of Philippe Petit's death defying tightrope walk between the newly built Twin Towers.

Robert says: "An essential addition to your Audible library."
    "Books where nothing happens"

Someone needs to list all of the great books that also happen to be painfully boring audiobooks, so I know which ones to avoid. This book would figure prominently on such a list.

I've come to find that beautifully written books where nothing happens tend to make poor audiobooks. That's exactly the case here. This book creates a vivid set of characters, but it basically stops there. I need more than that in an audiobook, I need to be entertained as well as impressed by use of language. Especially because I can't see and appreciate the words on the page.

I don't think that's a personal failing, but if it is, then I'd recommend that anyone who shares that failing stick to great books where things also happen to happen.

  • Pulp Physics: Astronomy: Humankind in Space and Time

    • ORIGINAL (9 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Dr. Richard Berendzen
    • Narrated By Richard Berendzen

In this unscripted recording, renowned astrophysicist Dr. Richard Berendzen takes you on a journey through space and time that is captivating from the moment he begins to speak. Enjoy the best of both worlds: an expert's knowledge in a user-friendly format!

Dell says: "Pulp Physics is insightful history"
    "Superior Book"

This book is truly exceptional--life changing. I don't have enough adjectives to describe it. I have a hard time understanding how anyone could dislike it. It takes on themes so vast that it is hard to go back to normal reading afterwards.
