    Story

As an embedded journalist in Iraq, North got a soldier's-eye view, often while under fire, of what the mainstream media failed to report. A decorated combat veteran, North watched Operation Iraqi Freedom with trained eyes unmatched by other journalists. What he witnessed compelled him to challenge post-war critics of the operation for their uninformed and deceptive views.

    Chris says: "Highly recommended"
"I wish this was narrated by Oliver North!"

    Story

Basically a rehash of the 2003 Fox News coverage of the Iraq War. I thought that was extremely well done at the time, so I found this book very interesting. The biggest flaw is that it's not narrated by Oliver North (except for an exceedingly brief introduction).

Extremely interesting and exciting. Excellent insider knowledge. Very good to know there's nobody more interested in maintaining Israel's security than the Mossad, regardless of fickle world opinion.

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

    Magpie says: "Super solid listen!!"

Poorly developed characters, ridiculous dialogue. Not entertaining at all. Waste of a credit.

Morten Storm was an unlikely Jihadi. A six-foot-one red-haired Dane, Storm spent his teens in and out of trouble. A book about the Prophet Mohammed prompted his conversion to Islam, and Storm sought purpose in a community of believers. He attended a militant madrasah in Yemen, named his son Osama, and became close friends with Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born terrorist cleric. But after a decade of Jihadi life, he not only repudiated extremism but, in a quest for atonement, became a double agent for the CIA and British and Danish intelligence.

This book has a slow start--for the first couple of hours I thought it was rather tedious, but it becomes hugely exciting. Extremely up-to-date content, stuff that was in the news just a few years or even months ago. Utterly fascinating!

An ordinary family man, geologist, and Mormon, Soren Johansson has always believed he'll be reunited with his loved ones after death in an eternal hereafter. Then, he dies. Soren wakes to find himself cast by a God he has never heard of into a Hell whose dimensions he can barely grasp: a vast library he can only escape from by finding the book that contains the story of his life. In this haunting existential novella, author, philosopher, and ecologist Steven L. Peck explores a subversive vision of eternity.

Janice says: "I'll be thinking about this one for a while."

It's a simple story. Boy finds proof that reality is a computer program. Boy uses program to manipulate time and space. Boy gets in trouble. Boy flees back in time to Medieval England to live as a wizard while he tries to think of a way to fix things. Boy gets in more trouble. Oh, and boy meets girl at some point.

It's written in the style of "Ready Player One", but the writing is far worse. I'm in the target audience (early middle-age computer geek growing up in the 80's), so I found it an entertaining guilty pleasure. The writer has a poor vocabulary though.

But his journey was not without its supreme challenges. He was critically wounded in 2007 when he was struck by machine-gun fire at point blank range. During his intense recovery period, Redman posted a sign on his door, warning all who entered not to "feel sorry for [his] wounds."

  • President Me: The America That's in My Head

    Story
    (338)

In President Me, Carolla shares his vision for a different, better America free from big issues like big government down to small problems like hotel alarm clock placement. Running on an anti-narcissism platform, President Carolla calls for a return to the values of an earlier time when stew and casserole were on every dinner table and there were no “service dogs” on airplanes. President Me hits right at the heart of what makes our country really annoying, and offers a plan to make all of our lives, but mostly Adam’s, much better.

    LE says: "Funny, Truthy, Douchey"
    "Quite entertaining, but repetitive..."

    Story

The only problem for me was that, as an avid Adam Carolla daily podcast listener, I'd heard 99.5% of the stories in this book several times. Though there was very little new, Adam's delivery is always entertaining.
