"as they leave our planet one by one....."
....i have recently found myself wondering why god (or whoever is in charge of this whole kit-n-kaboodle) keeps taking the good ones off the planet so early.....as they seem to being misplaced with average ones or less. this fictional memoir will make you yearn to hear the amazing stories of cultures that don't exist anymore by the folks that lived them....who are disappearing from our planet day by day. I had a wonderful old cowboy friend...a true cowboy..that died recently. He spoke of riding horses into bars and droving cattle for days on end. This book is about a man that had a parallel life to my friend Uncle James the cowboy. The circus culture is disappearing as the cowboy has.....and this book truly honors the lifestyle with it's difficulties and glorious moments. The narration is simply brilliant. Don't miss it.
"...eeeyyeeew."
The premise of this story is good.....the personal interactions are icky....very "cheap romance novel" interactions between the main characters. I really wanted them to stop talking and get to the plot of the book....sadly, I realized by the end of this book, that the action part of this series certainly wasn't happenin' in THIS book. Disappointing.
"fell short of the mark, but i did learn from it!"
....i read "A Dirty Job" and thought it was brilliant. I expected the same and better from this book, as it had gotten loftier reviews. I was disappointed by the regular references to sex (a little over the top and not quite funny) but thrilled at the opportunity to learn about other religions in such a simple way. So, would I recommend it? Probably... especially if you need a 101 on major religions of the world. For that, it's good.
"easy easy funny easy"
If you're looking for unforgettable characters, deep plots and exquisite writing, this isn't the book for you. But if you're looking for lighthearted entertainment that has some laughs and good reading by the reader, this is the book for you. I listened to this before I knew about the tv show that has been done on this series, so I had no preconceived notions....I just thought it was a great book to pass my commute time. It's perfect for that.
"oh, soooooooooo slow!"
this book and it's reading is paced at the small town pace....for older folks. if you're looking for a book that moves slowly, who's main character does fairly normal things in a fairly normal town with fairly normal manners with fairly normal regularity, this one's for you. For me? Well, I tried...but when traffic started seeming fast compared to the pace of this book, I was done. Never finished it, which is a very unusual occurance for me.
"Won't bore you children OR you!!"
Got a car ride coming up with kids ages 8-18? This book is the key to your sanity. Won't drive you crazy, will keep them entertained, and help the time fly by. The reading (unlike some other kids books here) is great.
"huge, epic and educational"
the best value on this website. The reading is fabulous, the story long and engaging and most importantly, EDUCATIONAL!!! Yes, there are things here that will make you think "no way."....but then that fleeting moment is gone, caught up in some twist of the plot or some insight that the author has made about culture at the time, and off you go again. Highest recommendation. Now, if I could only locate the rest of this series on this website! [=
"haunting and not to be forgotten"
i avoided shakespeare like the plague when in high school, so i can't make any comparisons....what i can say is that in the beginning I felt the reading was a bit slow on this book....and then it began to click into place. The novel is unforgettable, prose seeps in through the descriptions of a simple life that will leave you in awe of Wroblewski's writing talents. The story is like a river, winding, unpredictable, gentle, frightening in times of dark clouds. Highly recommended.
