Today, nine out of 10 Americans live in places at significant risk of earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, terrorism, or other disasters. Tomorrow, some of us will have to make split-second choices to save ourselves and our families. How will we react? What will it feel like? Will we be heroes or victims? Will our upbringing, our gender, our personality - anything we've ever learned, thought, or dreamed of - ultimately matter?

If you could sum up The Unthinkable in three words, what would they be?

    Be prepared.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Unthinkable?

How calm and composed everyone was in the twin towers just before they collapsed. I guess that's New Yorkers for you - nothing phases 'em...even when it should.

The bed and breakfast was hidden in the hills of West Virginia. Wary guests wondered how it could stay in business at such a creepy, remote location, especially with its bizarre, presidential decor and eccentric proprietor. With the event hotel for the national Iron Woman triathlon accidentally overbooked, competitor Maria was forced to stay at the Rushmore. But after checking into her room, she quickly realized she wasn't alone....

I saw a lot of parallels with American Slavery in this book. There is a lot of cruelty, which I suspect was mainly meant for cheap thrills, but which nevertheless did actually happen to slaves in the southern US. From the torture, to the dehumanization, rape, involvement of whole communities and taking of children it actually is not that far from the mark - just concentrated into a shorter period of time. I enjoyed the book because it was twisted and kept me on the edge of my seat. I disagree with some reviewers who imply that its too over-the-top ... I suspect its not as far from plausible as it may seem, and that's the scariest part of all.

The Past...Caught behind the lines of Hitler’s Final Solution, Saul Laski is one of the multitudes destined to die in the notorious Chelmno extermination camp. Until he rises to meet his fate and finds himself face-to-face with an evil far older, and far greater, than the Nazis themselves...

Would you try another book from Dan Simmons and/or Mel Foster and Laural Merlington ?

Yes - if it was shorter for the author. As for the narrators I don't know if I could, they have come to represent this book so completely that I can't imagine them giving voice to other characters!

Which character – as performed by Mel Foster and Laural Merlington – was your favorite?

Saul Laski - love the accent and the narrator really seems to capture the man's personality.

    Any additional comments?

One thing that I will say is the author literally explores every possible use of mind control. Talk about taking an idea to its full potential.

One morning the residents of Walden, Virginia, woke up to find the rest of the world gone. Just...gone.

Surrounding their town was a wall of inky darkness, plummeting Walden into permanent night. Nothing could get in - not light, not people, not even electricity, radio, TV, Internet, food, or water. And nothing could get out. No one who dared to penetrate the mysterious barrier has ever been seen again. Only their screams were heard. But for some, the darkness is not the worst of their fears. Driven mad by thirst, hunger, and perpetual night, the residents of Walden are ready to explode.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Why do you need an evil force to coax people into behaving badly? You've plunged a whole town into an extremely stressful and terrifying situation, just let that be the driving force for their actions.

What was most disappointing about Brian Keene’s story?

Characters just didn't seem real or believable. Made so much worse by the fact that their actions were being manipulated by a supernatural force. I can accept any situation as long as the characters are allowed to respond in what seems like a realistic fashion.

    Any additional comments?

This is basically like Under the Dome by Stephen King except that the author has explicitly made every characters' reactions to the situation fake by design. Don't buy this book - get Under the Dome which is much, much better.

One Christmas Eve in a small hollow in Boone County, West Virginia, struggling songwriter Jesse Walker witnesses a strange spectacle: seven devilish figures chasing a man in a red suit toward a sleigh and eight reindeer. When the reindeer leap skyward, taking the sleigh, devil men, and Santa into the clouds, screams follow. Moments later, a large sack plummets back to earth, a magical sack that thrusts the down-on-his-luck singer into the clutches of the terrifying Yule Lord, Krampus.

What other book might you compare Krampus to and why?

American Gods by Neil Gaiman. There are some pretty obvious parallels though I didn't really like American Gods - I think Krampus is a much more likeable guy.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The party at the bar. If only Christmas were like that! We'd have a lot less suicides.

    Any additional comments?

Excellent narration, in particular Krampus' voice is perfect - worthy of an award!

The good news is that the vast majority of soldiers are loath to kill in battle. Unfortunately, modern armies, using Pavlovian and operant conditioning have developed sophisticated ways of overcoming this instinctive aversion. sophisticated ways of overcoming this instinctive aversion. The psychological cost for soldiers, as witnessed by the increase in post-traumatic stress, is devastating.
