This book is SOP (standard Operating Procedure) for Mr. Tufo. Thank you sir for making another, "my favorite book ever"!! And special thanks to Sean Runnette for bringing such life to an over the top personality like Mike Talbot.
Don't get me wrong I enjoy the series. It's just that the writing is getting on my nerves after so many books. Example, without any details, an event occurs, the characters talk about the event and then 5 min later the same information is presented and the main character is like OMG I never saw this coming!!!! The main character is becoming more irritating but this may be me. Being retired military it frustrates me when he (Kyle) does things that are unprofessional and stupid. Overall I liked it but am really looking forward to the next installment...also is it me or is it irritating that Kyle has been saying things like "we've been doing this for years..." He has been saying this since book 1!!! It's not like its been 10-15 yrs or something!! Ok happy that's off my chest. Lol
The narrator, mr Drummond, sounds like a crappy capt Kirk imposter. I mean, sure there are pronunciation issues like another review stated...but seriously who has not heard of friggin Camp Lejeune!!! (though in his defense wikipedia does list "lajurn" as a second way to say it) But even aside with the most common military jargon being screwed up, his voice is just horrible. The way his voice trails off at the end of sentences, not to mention the absolute worst character voices, really destroyed this book. I will be reading the other two books.
As for the book, if you have made it this far you are like me and just want to see what happens. Reading this series after Star Carrier is a complete let down!
*****in summary...Drummond is the worst book narrator I have ever heard!!!*****
The story is really interesting. I really loved it!!! Completely worth it and I would read another book from this author. My only negitive is the narrator took some getting used to. I think maybe she was forcing the american accent...maybe shes Canadian or Brittish? Oh one other thing...they never say where the city is located. AWESOME mix of future sci-fi and zombie!!!!!!
The characters were all so well developed and the story just sucks you in.
Michael is my favorite character. His technical knowledge and curiosity in a world of horse and carts, mixed with the burden of the understanding what this knowledge tells him.I very much enjoyed watching this character develop as events unfold.
The main narrator (there are a couple others that thoughtfully sprinkled throughout the reading), has a great voice. His tones and inflections are perfect and pulled me deeper into the story.
As a 20 year military guy, I loved the part when we get the background on
Great story, similar to
see my review of the first novel...but overall worth knowing what happens to the "Family" 100 years later.
I really enjoyed it, and was thrilled to know that there was a second book. But a warning...the second book takes place 100 years in the future, but was written by the author in 1986 and has 28 books in that series. Star Wars type deal. Both books are good (although second is a bit dated with super cheese macho dialog). But the second does not really talk about many of the characters from the first book that you want to know about. So I can only hope that Mr. Robbins is planning some books that take place between the two. I am having surgery and will have 6-8 off from work so maybe I'll read the other 27 books! :)
