In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. The extremely complex and delicate operation, five months in the planning and twenty-two hours in the execution, involved a surgical plan that Carson helped initiate. Carson pioneered again in a rare procedure known as hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removed one half of their brain.

My book club selected this book and at first look I was going to skip it. I would have missed out. Dion Graham's pleasant voice brings you through Ben Carson's amazing life, from a struggling black kid in Detroit, raised by a single mom, through his college years, how he chose his profession as a pediatric neurosurgeon, internship, residency, etc. I'm most impressed with how he turned to God in times of trial, and gives the credit to God for who he has become and the things he's been able to do in his life.

Like I said, I didn't want to read it at first, and the first few chapters he did sound like a bragger at times. However, his mom Was pretty amazing, and it's hard to tell your own story, getting to the top of your class, etc. without sounding a little bit big headed. But somewhere along the story, my heart changed and I became very impressed with this guy. He ends the book with his advice on how everyone can succeed. THINK BIG

I coincidentally finished this book about the same time that Ben Carson spoke at the Presidential Prayer Breakfast, so I watched that on YouTube, and again was very impressed with this brilliant surgeon, patriotic, soft spoken, God fearing, incredible man.

I recommended this book to my dad and I recommend it to you!

Before Gabrielle Hamilton opened her acclaimed New York restaurant Prune, she spent twenty fierce, hard-living years trying to find purpose and meaning in her life. Above all she sought family, particularly the thrill and the magnificence of the one from her childhood that, in her adult years, eluded her. Hamilton’s ease and comfort in a kitchen were instilled in her at an early age when her parents hosted grand parties, often for more than one hundred friends and neighbors.

Would you recommend Blood, Bones & Butter to your friends? Why or why not?

I read BB & B for my book club, & I don't know that I'd recommend it. As narrator I thought she sounded dull at times, and I really could have done without all the "F" words. I don't think I'd want to hang out with Gabrielle, but this is her story, who am I to judge? It was interesting to see how life experiences shaped the girl into the woman, she had to fend for herself from her early teens, and she did, she worked hard, I admire that. She's an independent kind of woman and has done something with her life. Serving food, to hungry people. I admire that too.

Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate... until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

What did you love best about Matched?

Matched is an interesting story that pulls you in. It only starts with Cassia being matched to Xander, the perfect match, then Ky enters the picture. You read on and everyone has their story, and many have secrets.

What other book might you compare Matched to and why?

If I had to compare Matched; I'd say It's a little bit like Hunger Games because both are about a teenage girl who lives in a very controlling society, and then it's also like Twilight in that this young heroine has to make a choice between 2 young men. But it's a very different story, no violence, no vampires.

Which character – as performed by Kate Simses – was your favorite?

My favorite character was Cassia. I was surprised at first how young Kate sounds, but hers was the perfect voice for Cassia, the trusting, innocent girl that she is.

    Any additional comments?

I just finished Matched and Crossed and I'm excited for Reached to come out soon!
