The final book of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove tetralogy is an exhilarating tale of legend and heroism. Captain Woodrow Call, August McCrae's old partner, is now a bounty hunter hired to track down a brutal young Mexican bandit. Riding with Call are an Eastern city slicker, a witless deputy, and one of the last members of the Hat Creek outfit, Pea Eye Parker, now married to Lorena -- once Gus McCrae's sweetheart. This long chase leads them across the last wild streches of the West....

Would you try another book from Larry McMurtry and/or Daniel Von Bargen?

Will never touch a book read by this narrator. most annoying and unnatural cadence. Mispronunciations throughout and awful attempt at accents.

Would you recommend Streets of Laredo to your friends? Why or why not?

    Nope. Narration is too distracting.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Daniel Von Bargen?

    Anyone but.

Was Streets of Laredo worth the listening time?

    No

On the eve of Marcus Cicero's inauguration as consul of Rome, the grisly death of a boy sends ripples of fear through a city already wracked by civil unrest, crime, and debauchery of every kind. Felled by a hammer, his throat slit and his organs removed, the young slave appears to have been offered as a human sacrifice, forbidden as an abomination in the Roman Republic. For Cicero, the ill forebodings of this hideous murder only increase his frustrations and the dangers he already faces as Rome's leader.

Interesting to learn about Cicero and the times, but the story was pretty ho hum and predictable...surprise there. The narrator didn't help much and sounded like an over trained circus announcer.

In July 1890, Vincent van Gogh went into a cornfield and shot himself. Or did he? Why would an artist at the height of his creative powers attempt to take his life... and then walk a mile to a doctor's house for help? Who was the crooked little "color man" Vincent had claimed was stalking him across France? And why had the painter recently become deathly afraid of a certain shade of blue? These are just a few of the questions confronting Vincent's friends who vow to discover the truth of van Gogh's untimely death.

How this ever got published is beyond comprehension. And the narrator is equal to the task. Maybe it was supposed to be a comedy?

Richard K. Morgan has received widespread praise for his astounding 25th-century novels featuring Takeshi Kovacs, and has established a growing legion of fans. Mixing classic noir sensibilities with a searing futuristic vision of an age when death is nearly meaningless, Morgan returns to his saga of betrayal, mystery, and revenge, as Takeshi Kovacs, in one fatal moment, joins forces with a mysterious woman who may have the power to shatter Harlan's World forever.

Great concept on the first go, but this one just didn't have it. I think there was a plot but I kept falling asleep. Rambling descriptions and gratuitous sex without any direction or plot. Can't recommend this one to anyone. A shame as the first one was so interesting.

When Chaz Perron's wife discovers that he is running a scam (posing as a marine biologist to doctor water samples so that an agribusiness tycoon can continue illegally dumping fertilizer into the Everglades), he pushes her overboard from a cruise liner. Unlucky for Chaz, Joey survives clutching a bale of Jamaican pot. Rescued from the Atlantic by a former police officer, Mick Stranahan, she decides not to report him but instead haunt and taunt him, with Mick's help, by playing dead.

    Overall

The story line is marginally interesting. Full of pedantic preaching about saving the everglades and bad, stereotypical portrayals of southern Floridians. The narration is absolutely the worst I've ever heard in all the audio books I've ever listened to. The worst audio book ever.

"If Robert Littell didn't invent the American spy novel," says Tom Clancy, "he should have." In this spectacular Cold-War-as-Alice-in-Wonderland epic, Littell, "the American le Carre," takes us down the rabbit hole and into the labyrinthine world of espionage that has been the CIA for the last half-century. "Ostensibly a single novel, The Company can also be listened to as an anthology of cracking good spy stories," says (Publishers Weekly).

Exceptional piece of work, with exceptional narration. One of the best audio books I've ever heard. Too bad it had to have an ending.
