Carol Burnett tells some hilarious and some heartbreaking stories. Her style is comfortable and it really felt like I was simply hearing an old friend tell stories. I enjoyed it enough to listen to it again.
Margaret George wrote two of my all time favorite books: The Autobiography of King Henry VIII and Mary Queen of Scotland and the Isles so I was very excited when Mary, Called Magdalene popped up on my suggested reading list. The book starts off as very promising and very interesting. What I had trouble getting past was the terrible narration which I stuck out for more than half the book. At that point, I had begun to lose interest and finally gave up.
I bought this one to listen to with my daughter and wasn't disappointed. The story is very timely and made for many long and interesting discussions with her about suicide and being able to show true emotions. The characters are typical teenagers. Unlike some books where the characters are perfect in every way, Sloane and James have the same feelings and fears as many of the teens I know.
I don't want to give away any of the story beyond saying it is much more than a book about teen suicide. At the end of the book, the author talks a bit about creating it and the story line of the next book in the series. Very exciting!
This story starts out with a very harsh look at teenaged friends. Lots of drinking, lots of sex and lots of bullying. The main character relives the same day over and over again in order to correct some of her mistakes. What I found most interesting is how her perceptions of what was going on with others was often so off the mark and how actions have consequences that aren't always predictable. Sarah Drew is a terrific narrator and brought the story to life.
I listened to this story based on my enjoyment of The Program. The storyline was interesting but I had trouble listening because I really disliked the narrator. Two of the characters have accents and the reader did a poor job with them which grated on my nerves. Not my favorite book, but it could have been so much better with a better narrator.
I listened to this book based on a recommendation and was not disappointed. The story is unusual and very interesting. I think it captured the hopes and desires of a young girl perfectly.
I am a big Stephen King fan to begin with and my favorite books of his are the ones that don't depend too much on the supernatural. What I was struck with listening to Joyland was what a great story teller SK is. The book has a gently unfolding story with terrific character development. Michael Kelly's narration was perfect for this story. To me, the ghost story/mystery was almost secondary to the vivid description of Joyland itself. I found the whole thing very enjoyable and have listened to it a second time.
I laughed out loud several times. This hilarious book was well worth the credit!
The book begins with Stephen King's prologue in which he discusses how CARRIE came to be. In his own words he describes the book as a bit dated but still a good story which is exactly what I thought. I'm a long time SK reader and have enjoyed revisiting some of his older works. I am always struck with what a great story teller he is.
As some of the other reviewers have mentioned, it took me a little while to get caught up in the story. Once I was, I found myself captivated. This is my 3rd Kate Morton book and by far my favorite. Twists and turns abound. A good mystery and a nicely done historical novel.
This book is a gem. It has all of the qualities I look for including wonderful story, beautiful writing, FANTASTIC narration and a book I would listen to again. It is hard to say what this book is about in a way that conveys the sheer poetry of this story. Not always pretty and not always nice but always thought provoking.
Another word about Noah Galvan's performance: he gave such life and humanity to the character of Charlie. I have returned good books because of a bad narrator. This is a fine example of a good book made better by an excellent narrator.
