This book depicts the Roman era and it showed how depraved the people were without Christ in their lives. There is hope and Haddassah's character shows how we should serve one another with a servant's heart. This book does not hide the violence at all. Francine Rivers is so detailed in her writing, that I could smell the foul air, where the slaves were held in the ships. I could feel their desperation. I could feel the eternal hope in Haddassah. It was a long book, but I didn't want it to end. Be sure to read all three books in the series. I believe my husband would enjoy this book too, it isn't all about romance.
I only gave it 4 stars, because I would have liked another narrator, possibly two narrators. One for the males and one for Haddassah. He wasn't terrible though and it didn't keep me from listening.

I think I enjoyed the narrator as much as the story line in this book. I didn't realize that this was a Christian Historical Romance and was plesantly surprised. I like how Drake the main character completely changed his view on humanity. I read a lot of Christian fiction and I will add this author to my list. I wish I knew who narrated this book.

I thought it had a good story line, although I guessed how it would end.I think I would have been happy with an abridged version of this book. I purchased it, because of the glowing reviews on Amazon.com.

I wanted try one of Ted Dekker's books. My son really likes some of his books and I thought this would be a way of having something we could discuss and I really wanted to enjoy it. I had to push myself to stick with part I and then wanted part II to hurry up so I could get back to my life...
Like I said it was my first audio book and I didn't know what to expect. It took me a couple of times to not be distracted and get use to one person taking on the role (voices) of many characters. I suppose, I'll get use to it, but I wish this hadn't been my introduction to audio books. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone.
