Orphaned while onboard ship from Ireland, seven-year-old Lavinia arrives on the steps of a tobacco plantation where she is to live and work with the slaves of the kitchen house. Under the care of Belle, the master's illegitimate daughter, Lavinia becomes deeply bonded to her adopted family, though she is set apart from them by her white skin. Eventually, Lavinia is accepted into the world of the big house, where the master is absent and the mistress battles opium addiction.

I loved the story and the narrator. I don't think the ending of this story was as bad as some said, it's an ending, they can't all be happy. It's been hard for me to find a book to listen to now for a couple weeks because this one pulled me in so much. Very sad, very real, very interesting. It did make me tear up.

Ayla, one of the most remarkable and beloved heroines in contemporary fiction, continues to explore the world and the people around her with curiosity, insight, and, above all, courage. As the story opens, Ayla, Jondalar, and their infant daughter, Jonayla, are living with the Zelandonii in the Ninth Cave - a shelter of stone. Ayla has been chosen as an acolyte and has embarked on the arduous task of training to become a spiritual leader.

I really don't understand all the bad reviews. She repeats herself less in this last book than she did in her others. Her others were sooooo slow at some points and this one really had a bit more story to it. It was more like the first book to me. If you are trying to decide if you should buy this I would say go for it. It was worth it to me!!

Alissa doesn’t believe in magic. Her father’s stories about the Hold, a legendary fortress where human Keepers learn magic from the enigmatic Masters, are just that—stories. But her mother insists Alissa has inherited her father’s magical ability, so she must go to the Hold to be trained. On her way, she crosses paths with Strell, a wandering musician from the plains.

I listened to all 4 books and let me tell you I am sad she is not writing more about Strell and Alyssa. I loved loved loved this story and will listen over and over again, something I never usually do with a book. Completely recommend the book and the narrator as a positive experience.

I love the narrator and I like the story a whole lot!! I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of the series. just a note. I used to hate the narrator, couldn't get past her voice because she spoke so fast but really, push through..she has a gift and it fits this type of story perfectly!
