I am very torn about this book. Bronson Pinchot does an amazing job making all of the many characters feel like individuals. However, for me, it didn't work for me as an audiobook, in as much, as it just felt like it was taking forever to move along. I have an hour and a half commute every morning, and I just felt that I wasn't progressing fast enough through the story. I switched over to the Kindle version, and really enjoyed it. Marlantes creates some amazing characters and puts them into some trying situations. I am sure they are going to be with me for the rest of my life. Unfortunately, the way that the audio was progressing for me - it felt like that wasn't going to just be a metaphor.
All in all, if you have the time and patience - this is a rewarding experience.
The varying degrees of reviews really surprised me. Clearly, this is a "love it" or "hate it" kind of book. I fall whole-heartedly on the "love it" side.
To be honest, we're not breaking any new ground in the story - its a very, very classic mobster story. But if you're a fan of The Godfather, GoodFellas, the Sopranos, or just a resident of New Joisey, you're going to eat this up like it was pasta fagioli. Joey B is solid and gruff reading the text. Joey Pants is absolutely phenomenal. I'm absolutely amazed at how many distinct characters he performed. He really adds something unique to the performance. I'm actually thinking of starting the whole thing over....
Really well done...
Richards. Depp. One Credit. Over 20-hours of time well spent. One of the best audiobook experiences I've ever had.
Really, Really enjoyed this book. Having the author read it makes it very conversational and fun. Highly recommended
