I was hoping for something this was not, I was hoping for something adventurous, but found myself bored.

  • The Culture of Fear: Why Americans Are Afraid of the Wrong Things

America is a country gripped by fear. In this widely-acclaimed book, Barry Glassner exposes the people and organizations that manipulate our perceptions and profit from our anxieties. These peddlers of fear (politicians, advocacy groups, and the media) cost Americans dearly, weighing us down with needless worries and causing us to squander billions of dollars to fix mythological problems.

There is something fascinating or funny or truly bizarre on every page of this true tale of floral obsession: the story of how the head of a famous Seminole chief came to be displayed in the front window of a local pharmacy; or how 700 iguanas were smuggled into Florida; or the case of the only known extraterrestrial plant crime.

    "See the movie,"
    Overall

Very boring; no real story, just bits here and there, kinda like reading a dictionary. It pushes you away. However, the movie Adaptation is great, and believe it or not, all of any story in the book is fitted into the movie.

After 20 years in Britain, Bryson returned to the U.S. and decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. This is his humorous, inspiring account.

Jeff says: "Wonderful book, but hardly abridged"
    "Listen to that voice"
    Overall

AHHHHH Bryson, my favorite writer, although ironically I'm never read any of his stuff. I say, Why deprive yourself of his voice, a pleasant mix of british and American, with a nice bass tone. I listen to his cd's over and over again, and I encourage others to do the same. Although his two most recent novels are excellent, it is "A Walk in the Woods" that contains the most Bryson, shown most excellently over his dialogue with "Kats." After listening to this book, don't be surprised if you feel the need to hike a bit of the Appallacians.
