I am a fan of John Irving. This book really let me down. The story is flat and unremarkable. Only the retelling of the AIDs crisis in the 80s had any emotion to it. It the story of closeted gay man who enjoys his men to have breasts and dress in women's clothing. I would really love money and hours of listening returned to me after this awful listening expereince.
This is a very compelling. King writes so convincingly from a child's point of view, and to create a compelling story. William Hurt is stunning as narrator and this audio production is the best I have ever heard (out of 200 audio books the past 10 years). This is a typical novel in that is contains 5 novellas. The first is the longest and the best. The other four pick up later in the sixties. The only problem with this audio book is that it has the picture from the dreadful movie of Hearts of Atlantis. Please don't ever go near the movie it will ruin your appreciation for the novel. .
This book was quite boring and redundant... I regret buying this book. It was the same story about her redneck family told again and again and again.
This book moved me as much as my favorite Stephen King book, Hearts of Atlantis. It brings out the humanity of the characters using the JFK assassination as tableau to look back and ask, as we all do, "What If?"
