"I finished the book wanting less"
This book was a disappointment. It did nothing to progress the Silvia Compson story. Silvia appears even more bitter and unlikeable than in earlier novels. While one of the plot lines was intended to provide background into her sisters life and motivation, this reader was still left with an unflattering picture of Claudia, and her relationship with Sylvia.
The book was a reprise of various plots in other books in the series and lacked the historical references other books in the series bring.
I finished the book wanting less.
"Read Keeping Faith instead"
I thought this book was outside the formula when the main characters stepped into court without lawyers, but no, the book turned into the classic Pioult court battle about children. The difference is that the characters were unformed and shallow, and the music tracks were at best, just too long. Get this book and fast forward thru the music, or use your credit on Keeping Faith, instead.
"Wrong Genre"
This is such a good book that it needs to be in regular fiction, not in romance. Robyn Carr is a good author, her Virgin River series is comprised of books with interesting characters, plots and places, but her dialog from the male characters is so flawed that I am constantly reminded that they are "romance novels"
The main characters of this book are women, fully developed characters. Read it you will love it.
"Good book, good narration, unsuitable music"
The Magicians Assistant has interesting characters, and interesting premise and a weak ending. The end leaves you hanging, but not to the point where you want a sequel, but it leaves you in a place where you as the reader no longer care about the characters. The narration is good enough for you to stay in story, but not good enough to be able to tell the characters apart by voice alone. The production is poor at best. In a book where the main characters like opera, classical and country music, at the end and beginning of the chapters is an upbeat jazz, that is inappropriate repetitive and ineffective.
"Worth the credit"
The Contemporary romances written in the late 80???s are a tad dated, but the stories are engaging enough to keep your focus. Excellent narration. Stories are a mix of romance, intrigue, and suspense. Worth the credit
"Wait until this book goes on sale"
Weak plot, weak characterization, this tome is even missing the sexual pull between Stephanie and Ranger / Stephanie and Joe. Janet it may be time to hang up Plum's gun.
"Good read, reminiscent plot"
Good read, don’t want to put it down, but plot reminiscent of other Phillips books.
Protagonist is a washed up pro quarterback Bobby Denton looking for a new career. (not unlike Cal Bonner in Nobody's Baby But Mine) who falls in love with a woman who is not his type on a car trip. (Not unlike Natural Born Charmer). He has an attractive single mother Sue (Not unlike Natural Born Charmer). Sue ends up falling for the town’s most hated person. (Aint she sweet is centered on a similar character.)
Even with the recycled plot, the book was worth the listen, Anna Fields is a narrator at home in contemporary romance as non fiction.
"Read after Match Me"
This book uses characters first introduced in Match Me If You Can. It is more of a spin off than a continuation. It is a delightful book full of rich characters and worth the read. Anna Fields is a great narrator. Her voices give you the flavor of the character.
"No surprises but an entertaining read"
Susan Elizabeth Phillips has a gift for spinning interesting characters, and Nobody's Baby But Mine is full of them. The book is predictable, but worth the read, to the point where you don’t want to hear last chapter. The original release date of 1997 does not date the novel, set in the present. Anna Fields does a believable job of narration, her voices set the characters apart.
"Poorly edited"
Please remind me not to buy another abridged book. This one was shortened to the point that you lose all the suspense and characterization that I assume the author put in the original novel. If this book isn’t available as an audio book in the unabridged form, read it on paper.
