A wild imagining of a future and its political movements, close-up war, adventure, and aware AIs. Full of great throw-away details like the Femininists [sic], with their backpackable hoop skirts. Lots of in-jokes like the men in black.
Not the most tightly plotted (or comprehensible!) book, but the reader makes it worthwhile and memorable.
One of Hambly's best books (see all the reviews on the Amazon side). A counter to the typical dragon/pseudo-medieval/hero stories.
Well read by Derek Perkins, who seems to be developing a niche for properly pronounced and clear readings of action fantasies.
Martha Wells has been fortunate to have such fine narrators for her previously issued audiobooks: Derek Perkins for "Death of a Necromancer" and Christopher Kipiniak for "Cloud Roads" and its sequels.
I was really looking forward to the Fall of Ile-Rien books being recorded.
I listened to the little sample of "The Wizard Hunters' and thought "what an odd choice for a narrator", and bought the recording anyway. Mistake. I've stopped listening. The recording is too juicy, the intonation too Valley (phrases ending higher then they began), the emphasis unnatural, and the whole effect incomprehensible.
The "Fall of Ile-Rien" trilogy is great fun. Read the books and listen in your head.
Kudos to Perkins and the producers, for taking the time that action description needs. Very clear, easy to visualize, with no jarring mispronunciations.
What's with the horrible fake British accents?
As always, I listened to the sample of this book before buying it, and the narrator has a pleasant generic American voice. Unfortunately, she, or her producer, thought it would be a good thing to render conversations in "British" accents.
It's unlistenable, and spoilt what I remember as a good enough story. If anyone in the publishing world is reading this: no more cut-rate British accents!
