  • We Die Alone: A WWII Epic of Escape and Endurance

    • UNABRIDGED (6 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By David Howarth
    • Narrated By Stuart Langton

It begins with an ambushed commando raid that leaves all but one of the expatriate resistance fighters dead or captured. Though wounded, Jan Baalsrud, the sole survivor, takes off on a courageous, incredible trek into the wilds of the Lyngen Alps, while the Nazis pursue him relentlessly. He suffers frostbite, snowblindness, and a terrible fall in an avalanche. At last, delirious and near death, he chances on to a cabin, where the first in a series of remarkably brave and clever men and women come to his aid.

    Erik says: "An unbelievable journey"
"An inspiring story of incredible courage!"
What other book might you compare We Die Alone to and why?

Id compare this with The Longest Walk, and The Endurance. Both detail the incredible limits of human endurance under extreme circumstance for survival.

    Any additional comments?

Having been through hardships of my own, stories like these are very encouraging and inspiring. You can never give up on hope. Thoroughly enjoyed this book!

  • Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 23 mins)
    • By Alfred Lansing
    • Narrated By Simon Prebble
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October, 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.

David says: "Superb in so many ways"
    "Amazing because its true!"
Where does Endurance rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Endurance is one of my top 3 favourite books from audible. Loved it!

Have you listened to any of Simon Prebble’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was the first time I had heard Simon Prebble, and he is the best Narrator Ive heard along with Stuart Langton.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Any additional comments?

In my early highschool years I was given this book as a birthday present. It was the most fascinating books I had ever read and couldnt put it down. Then I had to share it! But I think listening to it again as the audio version has been an even more exciting experience. Forever the question in your mind is, Will they make it? I couldnt recommend a better book. The lengths humans will strive to survive is perhaps greater then we may ever realize until placed in adverse circumstances. Never can a story better illustrate this then the true story of Endurance: Shakletons Incredible Voyage.

  • The Long Walk: The True Story of a Trek to Freedom

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 34 mins)
    • By Slavomir Rawicz
    • Narrated By John Lee

Twenty-six-year-old cavalry officer Slavomir Rawicz was captured by the Red Army in 1939 during the German-Soviet partition of Poland and sent to the Siberian Gulag. In the spring of 1941, he escaped with six of his fellow prisoners, including one American. Thus began their astonishing trek to freedom.

Roger says: "Good story, well read"
    "Overcoming Incredible Odds"
If you could sum up The Long Walk in three words, what would they be?

    Endurance, hope, will

What other book might you compare The Long Walk to and why?

    Endurance and We Die Alone

    Which scene was your favorite?

    The scape from the camp

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When two of the characters died in the Gobi.

    Any additional comments?

I am always inspired by true stories of survival. There are 3 that I know of that amaze me almost beyond belief. This is one of those!
