In this adventure from the pen of Sweden's master of crime and mystery, a disillusioned Inspector Kurt Wallander is thrown back into the fray when he becomes both hunter and hunted. Crestfallen, dejected, and spiraling into an alcohol-fuelled depression after killing a man in the line of duty, Inspector Wallander has made up his mind to quit the police force for good. When an old acquaintance, a solicitor, seeks Wallander's help and later turns up dead, Wallander realizes that he was wrong not to listen.

One of Mankell's best! Interesting plot and story moved right along with less depressing moments from our great police officer (can't spell his name).

A century from now, thanks to a technology allowing instantaneous travel across light-years, humanity has solved its energy shortages, cleaned up the environment, and created far-flung colony worlds. The keys to this empire belong to the powerful North family - composed of successive generations of clones. Yet these clones are not identical. For one thing, genetic errors have crept in with each generation. For another, the original three clone "brothers" have gone their separate ways, and the branches of the family are now friendly rivals more than allies. Or maybe not so friendly....

    Story

A long and complicated detective story set in the semi-near future--about 300 years ahead. Fun for mystery fans to read about futuristic forensics and see that some things remain the same, such as careful, painstaking work. That's only part of the story, Hamilton flips back and forward to reveal glimpses of the universe, new worlds and dawning colonialism with its troubles and foibles and the ever present bureaucracy. Hamilton, as always, manages to tie up all the loose ends with a more than satisfactory climatic ending. A suspenseful, fun read beautifully narrated with so many intricacies that its worth listening to more than once. Can't help wondering what kind of mind composes masterpieces like this? By the way, this does not seem to be a continued story like the Void Series, but complete in the 36 delightful hours.

An author whose previous, wildly successful novels have earned him a reputation as fantasy's master of magic, Brandon Sanderson continues to dazzle audiences with this tale of princesses and gods. In this extraordinary world, those who attain glory return as gods. And those who can master the essence known as breath can perform the most wondrous miracles - or unleash the most devastating havoc.

This alternate word story would probably appeal more to a Navy man. A lot of action and some original ideas but dialogue and basic story too predictable.

The four fires in this story are passion, religion, warfare, and fire itself. While there are many more fires that drive the human spirit, love being perhaps the brightest flame of all, it is these four that have moulded us most as Australian people. The four fires give us our sense of place and, for better or for worse, shape our national character.

A little slow at the beginning until you get to know the characters and fall in love with them, then I couldn't stop listening even though its long. Sometimes readers doing regional accents are so thick I can't understand them but this reader does a great job sounding authentic but clear. Great insights into a little written about period in Australian history.

With more than 30 million copies of his works published, in 37 languages, award-winning author Henning Mankell may be Sweden's most accomplished novelist. Here he crafts the icy, atmospheric tale of Fredrik Welin, a disgraced surgeon living in exile on a small island. When Fredrik receives a surprise visit from a lover he abandoned decades earlier, he begins the difficult road to redemption.

But still a good story with an eccentric main character. Loved the background setting on a lonely island on a lonely, frozen coast. I was sad to reach the end.

Sent out into the galaxy, these shatterlings have stood aloof as they document the rise and fall of countless human empires. They meet every 200,000 years to exchange news and memories of their travels with their siblings.

The girls confess to the crime, showing no remorse whatsoever. Two open-and-shut cases. At first these two incidents seem to have nothing in common, but as Wallander delves deeper into the mystery of why the girls murdered the cab driver, he begins to unravel a plot much more complicated than he initially suspected.

Enjoyed this maybe a little more at the beginning than the end, but Wallender is always a fun listen and the characters fascinating. i had no problems with the reader but thought the plot a little weak and far-fetched. I've now read almost all the Wallender stories and hope a new one will be coming soon.

Mike Wingate had a rough childhood  —  he was abandoned at a playground at four years old and raised in foster care. No one ever came to claim him, and he has only a few, fragmented memories of his parents. Realistic treatment of a young daughter's murder and its effect on the parents and friends. Suspense great. It bothered me when Rafferty gets into trouble, but the story still kept me glued to the end. Scott Brick is a little dramatic for my taste.

I was surprised when this turned out to be an end-of-the-world story--didn't get that from the book description. Lots of action and interesting concepts of what happens next. I got a little tired of the female protagonist, but the rest of the characters were great and the story moved right along.
