  • Nonsense on Stilts: How to Tell Science from Bunk

Why do people believe bunk? And what causes them to embrace such pseudoscientific beliefs and practices? Noted skeptic Massimo Pigliucci sets out to separate the fact from the fantasy in this entertaining exploration of the nature of science, the borderlands of fringe science, and - borrowing a famous phrase from philosopher Jeremy Bentham - the nonsense on stilts.

First off the narration is bad. Very boring, almost sounds like a computer voice.

The content is OK. You can definitely tell the writer has a real disdain for conservatives and anyone with religion. His points are good and I agree with many of them, but he cannot hide his obvious disgust with all things conservative. In fact, he spends an entire chapter on one conservative judge who shockingly sided with reason over religion. He kept pointing out that he was a conservative judge as if it is totally beyond the realm of possibility that he would be fair and impartial.

Dan Emmett was just eight years old when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. The events surrounding the president's death shaped the course of young Emmett's life as he set a goal of becoming a U.S. Secret Service agent-one of a special group of people willing to trade their lives for that of the president, if necessary. Within Arm's Length is a revealing and compelling inside look at the Secret Service and the elite Presidential Protective Division (PPD).

Right off the bat, the author warns that this is not a book about gossip. He's correct. I don't need gossip but it would have been nice if the stories he told included interesting antidotes, or things I may not have already known. This book describes the incredible career of a true patriot but included a lot of chest-thumping and surface info. It's as if he gave the manuscript to the feds and they edited out anything juicy, or at least a little juicy. You don't need to divulge state secrets or break your oath to make it a bit more interesting.

This was a terrific departure from what I usually listen to. This is going to sound rough, but I have been reading a lot of Stephen King lately, and this makes him look almost amateurish. They are different writers for sure, but I just loved this book and style. It's due in NO small part to the genius narration. I mean, genius.

Joyland is a brand-new novel and has never previously been published.

It was a short book, especially for King. The story is well told but it is a little light on substance. For me, reading longer books like 11/22/63 was much more satisfying. Plus, this story didn't have very much depth. Not a bad book, just a little light for me.

  • The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism

Goodwin describes the broken friendship between Teddy Roosevelt and his chosen successor, William Howard Taft. With the help of the "muckraking" press, Roosevelt had wielded the Bully Pulpit to challenge and triumph over abusive monopolies, political bosses, and corrupting money brokers. Roosevelt led a revolution that he bequeathed to Taft only to see it compromised as Taft surrendered to money men and big business. The rupture led Roosevelt to run against Taft for president, an ultimately futile race that gave power away to the Democrats.

You really have to love history. The book is very detailed and based mostly off of personal letters written between Teddy and Taft. It can get a little long-winded at times, but that being said, I don't know what I would remove from book if asked to shorten it.

I really loved learning more about Taft, a little-known character in history. He was truly a great man.

  • The Joy of Hate: How to Triumph over Whiners in the Age of Phony Outrage

Greg Gutfeld hates artificial tolerance. At the root of every single major political conflict is the annoying coddling Americans must endure of these harebrained liberal hypocrisies. In fact, most of the time liberals use the mantle of tolerance as a guise for their pathetic intolerance. And what we really need is smart intolerance, or as Gutfeld reminds us, what we used to call common sense. The Joy of Hate tackles this conundrum head on- - replacing the idiocy of open-mindness with a shrewd judgmentalism that rejects stupid ideas, notions, and people.

I was surprised that a lot of people said this was highly suspenseful and gripping. I didn't think so at all. I thought the story was a bit boring. The subject matter was dark and disturbing, but there was a lack of detail that sort of diluted all of that. Not that I really need a lot of detail to understand what's happening, but the lack of detail made the whole thing hard to believe and get into.
