. . . from the very beginning, but the narrator was horrible. She has this sort of chipper voice that's not at all in keeping with the tenor of the story and the character delineation was so subtle that it was almost non-existent; with a more suitable narrator, this would have been a 5 star listen, in my opinion.
I struggled with this book: I wanted to know what was happening to Kate, but I didn't want the book to end! I loved the main character, Kate, and cheered for her as she grew and changed and WON!
I wish, wish, wish, that Carrie Kabak would write another novel - I loved her writing style, the storyline, and the emotions that all the characters brought me. Please Ms. Kabak, bring us more!
Kate Reading is an excellent narrator - I'm looking forward to finding more offerings from her.
I love Alice Hoffman's voice when she tells a story and 'The Story Sisters" is another beautiful, haunting tale. Nancy Travis is a fabulous narrator and really does justice to the story.
I haven't finished the story yet, but I'm loving it.....I couldn't wait until I finished the book to comment on the narrator - her accent is horrible, her reading is wooden, and her phrasing and pauses are not good. I've found myself wanting to pull the plug on more than one occasion because of my irritation with the narrator, but I've become very invested in the characters and storyline and knew I'd be really disappointed if I didn't find out how it ended. I'd really like to rate this book a 3.5 because of the narrator, while the story itself is, in my opinion, a 4.5.
I got this book because of Lansen's "The Girls" - this didn't grab me like that book did. It took me a little while to get used to Ruby Dee's cadence as the narrator. I think the abridgement was not good - there were plot lines that weren't fully fleshed out. All in all a pleasant listen, but not one I'd gush over.
. . . but unfortunately the narrator was so whiney that I nearly ejected the disc from my player. I loved the premise, but the author didn't need to tell us every time one of the characters 'sipped their juice' or 'ate a bite of scone' - I didn't need a play by play of the food and drink consumed. There were some inspirational moments but they were overshadowed on the whole by the sappiness.
This novel had me longing for my commute and any other time I could steal to listen! I thought the narration was excellent and well suited for the story. The storyline had me running through the whole gamut of emotions from laughter to tears and there were definitely enough turns of the story to keep me interested and wanting more. I'm anxiously looking forward to more from this author!!!
I have to admit I found this book during a search for the narrator, Anna Fields - this is the second book I've listened to that she has narrated and she is INCREDIBLE! I liked the premise of the story as described by Audible - I became wrapped up in this story so quickly and became so invested in Jane and Akiko and the outcome of their stories. There are, as others have pointed out, some very gorey, painful and touching parts to this story and as someone said, they occur within moments of each other!! I can't wait to listen to the other offering by Ruth Ozeki read by Anna Fields - I anticipate being enthralled!!
I was so conflicted while listening to this book - I wanted to know what was going to happen next, but didn't want it to end! The writing was rich and compelling and the narrator was was soothing, lively and wonderful. The author did a wonderful job of describing scenes, allowing you to 'draw' them in your mind - I can still picture Lucia and her room after more than a month since I listened to this. The two friends I loaned it to both raved about the pictures they were able to 'draw' as well - without prompting! They loved it too!
The format and delivery took a bit to get into, but after I did, I couldn't wait until my next commute . . . strange, but true. The rhythm of the love and intimacy of the two characters grabbed me and pulled me in. I've shared it with one of my co-workers and she liked it as well.
