New York Times best-selling author Carol O’Connell has won a wide fan base with her popular novels starring NYPD detective Kathy Mallory. In The Chalk Girl, a little girl is abandoned in Central Park—with her uncle’s body in a tree not far away. Recognizing a kindred spirit in the girl, Mallory takes the case. But her investigation soon leads to a trail of murder and blackmail spanning 15 years.

I started the Mallory series before I started losing my vision and since I have greedily looked over and over for more of Ms. O'Connell's books on audible. I haven't even finished this one yet and find myself going outside during my lunch hour to listen. This book, as in most of her books, lightly touch that "horror" nerve, but just enough to grab your attention and hold on! I can't decide which I like the most, the Pendergast series by the Preston/Child duo or the Mallory series. High praise indeed! The development of the mystery is classic O'Connell, and the addition of the child really off-sets Mallory's pecular personality. I highly recommend this book and anxiously await more books by O'Connell on audible!

Known throughout for his prowess in the bedroom, Morgan Lyons, the eighth Earl of Westcliffe, cannot forgive an unpardonable affront to his honor. Discovering his young bride in the arms of his brother was a staggering blow?so he banished the beautiful deceiver to the country and devoted himself to the pursuit of carnal pleasure.

Couldn't finish this one. I readily admit many historical romance stories have somewhat implausible story lines, but authors like Lisa Kleypass and Gaalen Foley built enough mystery and intrigue, along with the usually slowly escalating sensuality between the characters, that if the story line is somewhat hoakey, the overall story is good. This one is not of that caliber.

Anne Flosnik is as usual flawless in her narration, and the only reason I was able to make it at least 1/2 way through the book.

    Story

This book grabbed and held onto my attention. Of course, like all of this genre, it is somewhat predictable, but so what? It is a very well told story, with a fiery protagonist. I disagree with another reviewer, Anne Flosnik does a wonderful job. She does have a melodramatic voice, this is a melodramatic genre! I love her accent, and the way she is able to give each character his or her own voice. I will choose books I may not have chosen if she is narrating.

Upon her father's death, beautiful, headstrong Lady Clare knew that she must wed, for the protection of the Isle of Desire now fell to her. Yet when her guardian's choice of prospective husband rode through her castle gates, she felt utterly betrayed. All sinewy muscle and savage steel, Sir Gareth of Wyckmere was not the poet she'd requested but a fearsome knight whose only interest was in war.

I used to think no one could write a sizzling love scene the way Amanda Quick did, but had given up on her as her books seemed to be getting quite "tepid". She proved me wrong with this one. The story line is predictable, but isn't that what we want from these types of romance novels? Keep em coming Amanda!
