"What took me so long???"
OK, so clearly this series started a while ago.....and yet, I had not picked it up. That's the "bad" part. The good part is that I now have many great books to look forward to! More good news....the narrator is fantastic, with both male and female characters. How lucky am I?
This series kicks off strongly with Dmitri and Reggie's story. The plot development is good, though it borders on too light with some of the characters that I know will have their own story later in the series. But, none of us want to listen to hours on end of background and set-up though either, so perhaps Ms. Warren played this smart. There has to be enough interaction to keep us turning the proverbial page.....right?
Can't wait to hear more -- really....I just bought books two and three to keep my fix going. Thank you, Ms. Warren, for introducing me to your new world of OTHERS. The theme may be common (vampires, shifters, etc.), however, your writing is anything but! There are laugh out loud moments on practically every page! I feel like I'm friends with Regina, Ava, and the gang already!
"Ms. Banks fell short of her usual mark....."
I almost always enjoy Ms. Banks books. They do have a certain predictability like most genres. And if truth be told, I may have enjoyed this story more with a different narrator. Mr. Berkely did not meet my expectations on the female characters. It actually became distracting enough for me that I did not even finish the book. Perhaps this book is better enjoyed in either paperback, or ebook?
"Predictable, historical romance...... 3+ stars"
Its been a while since I read a true historical romance novel, and this book was very representative of the typical components. It was well written, and the narrator did a very good job with the text. However it was very predictable with a creepy old guy, and the recalcitrant heroine who wants everyone to like her just the same. Queue the hero with the tainted past who saves her.....and together they are restored to their well-deserved status within society.
But still...... if this is your "cup of tea", and you're looking for a bit of mild escapism, then I'm sure you'll enjoy this story.
"4.5 STARS --- Good, well-developed story!"
I really enjoyed this book, and will read/listen to more from Lori Foster. In most romance stories, the plot is completely secondary and usually pretty weak. Here, Ms. Foster was able to develop equal parts romance:thriller and they competed nicely. The narrator did a great job with the text, and was able to maintain the appropriate pace/rhythm so as not to distract. Well done!!!
"Time well spent!"
I thoroughly enjoyed both the narrator and the story. I purchased and listed to the whole series and loved them all. With other purchases, there have been times when the choice of narrator detracted from the story....not true here. Well done!
