It's springtime in Styria. And that means war. There have been nineteen years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white. While armies march, heads roll, and cities burn, behind the scenes bankers, priests, and older, darker powers play a deadly game to choose who will be king.

Lore says: "Solid, but not as good as the First Law trilogy."
    "IMHO..."
    Overall

This was a terrific book. The reader captured the tone of the story as a whole and did a good job with the characterizations. And what characters! The length may seem daunting to some but the story is nicely paced and doesn't lag. The characters are fabulously flawed and range from sword for hire to poisoner extraordinaire because the heroes of the tale are as bad as the villains. Fun stuff and funny too. Dastardly derring do and quips to boot!

They were just kids when they stumbled upon the horror of their hometown. Now, as adults, none of them can withstand the force that has drawn them all back to Derry, Maine, to face the nightmare without end, and the evil without a name.

and now it is one of my favorite audio books as well. Steven Weber does such a fantastic job reading this, that the epic proportions of this novel recede and you find yourself engrossed in each bit of the tale as it unfolds. I've waited a long time for this to be done in audio format and oh, my! It was worth the wait. Weber does justice to each character in turn and has a seemingly effortless delivey. The voices stay distinct, even though there are so many. So much of the story takes me back to my own childhood summers spent running around outside with my tribe of friends, looking for a little adventure and a little independence. It's hard to say which of the baddies is the scariest, the supernatural evil clown or the "big boys" that put an all too real hurt on each member of the group in turn. Watching the relationships develop as each finds their place in the group is heartening. Bad television movie (IMHO) aside, this is one of King's best, most haunting works and this version makes it all the more enjoyable. It's so rare to find a book that encompasses so much over the top, outright scary stuff yet doesn't lose the rest of the story to the horror. Don't let the length of this one dissuade you. It really is that good.

Meet Skulduggery Pleasant: ace detective, snappy dresser, razor-tongued wit, crackerjack sorcerer, and walking, talking, fire-throwing skeleton, as well as ally, protector, and mentor of Stephanie Edgely, a very unusual and darkly talented 12-year-old. These two alone stand in the way of an all-consuming ancient evil.

I ran across this title while looking for summer reading material for my 15 year old. She reads a lot but isn't the audio book fan that I am. After hearing me laugh like a loon for a few hours, she finally broke down and listened to this one herself...and LOVED it! She told all her friends to get it and has been eagerly waiting for the sequel. Bones, smart aleck dialogue and a trench coat...what's not to love.
