How could it have taken me so long to find other Bryce Courtenay books besides The Power of One? Whitethorn was a huge pleasure, made more so by the skill and talent of Humphrey Bower, who adds so much to this book with his reading. Do yourself a huge favor and listen to this book.
I live in San Francisco and I kind of have a thing for San Francisco and its history. My office is about 1/4 mile from the old location of Jim Jones' People's Temple on Geary Street. So, I was excited to listen to this book - and the book does not disappoint. It seems to be really well researched, and it is a fascinating story. It is so dark that I was ready for it to end when it did. But it was also so interesting that I was compelled to do more research on Jonestown after listening. I highly recommend this audiobook.
I'm biased - The Power of One is probably my favorite novel of all time. Inexplicably, it's taken me a couple decades to seek out other Courtenay novels. But now that I have done so, I couldn't be more grateful. The Potato Factory is another amazing novel. It's not for the faint of heart, just as some (all?) of his other works aren't. But it's a great story with great characters, and it's well worth a listen. And I can't imagine a better narrator for these stories than Humphrey Bower. Mr. Bower really brings the characters to life. I can't wait to listen to the follow-up.
Quite a bit better than I expected - I am not typically a fan of business books. For instance, even though I earn a living via Google, I have never read Battelle's book on Google. But I loved this book. Great writing, and I thought it was very broad in scope. It's not just about marketing, or product, or user experience, or Larry or Eric., etc. It's about all of that, and told in such a compelling way - definitely highly recommend this audiobook.
The Power of One is one of my favorite books and movies, so I was expecting quite a lot from this book. It did not disappoint. It is an amazing story, and the narration is as good as I have ever heard. I was so sad to come to the end - I wanted it to just keep going.
I thought these stories were fantastic - I cannot understand the 2 negative reviews. The readers so a fabulous job. The only negative for me is that when I bought and listened to this audiobook in Q4'09, there were 2 stories that were missing! Audible says that we'll be notified when the 2 additional stories are available in audio format, but it's been months and I've heard nothing.
