  • The Iliad

    • ABRIDGED (8 hrs and 50 mins)
    • By Robert Fagles (translator), Homer
    • Narrated By Derek Jacobi, Maria Tucci

Robert Fagles brings the energy of contemporary language of this 2,700-year-old epic, while maintaining the drive and metric music of Homer's poetry, as well as the impact and nuance of Homer's mesmerizing repeated phrases.

As a scholar, Fagles praises Homer's directness and simplicity, the breadth of his imagination, and the power of his song. As a translator, he brilliantly captures these very qualities.

You are able to focus on the story without too much distraction.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    100 BBQs on a Beach.

Some of the female characters were voiced lamely.

  • The World Was Never the Same: Events That Changed History

    • Narrated By Professor J. Rufus Fears

    Story
    (64)

History is made and defined by landmark events-moments that irrevocably changed the course of human civilization. They have given us: spiritual and political ideas; catastrophic battles and wars; scientific and technological advances; world leaders both influential and monstrous; and cultural works of unparalleled beauty.

What would have made The World Was Never the Same: Events That Changed History better?

If it the author took a neutral stance on Christianity and the Bible.

What could The Great Courses have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Focus just on history, and cut out Christian dogma.

How could the performance have been better?

Cut out the Christian dogma (see chapter 2, for example). The author loses credibility in chapter 2 and his enthusiasm is misplaced.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Chapter 1 was quite promising.

    Any additional comments?

This book should come with a disclaimer and perhaps not be labelled as a history book.
