Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Depression era circus, nursing home in 2005.. Not many authors could make this juxtaposition work the way that this book does. There is an amazing sense of "being there" in this audio production. You can smell the air, feel the heat, it's completely engrossing. The narration of the character is spot-on by both narrators. You can't ask for a better blend of story and sound!

In a time long forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons off balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. As the cold returns, sinister forces are massing beyond the protective wall of the kingdom of Winterfell. To the south, the king's powers are failing, with his most trusted advisor mysteriously dead and enemies emerging from the throne's shadow.

Would you consider the audio edition of A Game of Thrones to be better than the print version?

No, not a huge fan of the narrator, and there is a lot of repetition/bad editing in the recording.

Did Roy Dotrice do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

I think his voice is well suited to the general theme of the book, but he often repeats his accents for unrelated people. It can be disconcerting and confusing.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

The plotline was riveting, but there is no way that you could listen to this book all at one time.

Growing up, the only place tomboy Thayer Wentworth felt at home was at her summer camp - Camp Sherwood Forest in the North Carolina Mountains. It was there that she came alive and where she met Nick Abrams, her first love...and first heartbreak.

As an Atlantan, there are so many inconsistencies in the history, geography, etc. that it was distracting and that is the most minor complaint I have about this book. In general, I am a Siddons fan, but this book seemed to have a meandering plot with no real purpose. The ending, while I won't give it away, was unbearably disappointing and anti-climactic. This is by far one of her worst efforts and not worth the listen.

On the up side, the narrator did a GREAT job with the varying accents that she was given and it was for the narrator alone that I finished listening to the book.

    "Sound effects were good"
    Overall

The best part of this book was the music and sound effect bumpers. Does that tell you what you need to know?

Normally, I too am a Patterson fan, but this was really terrible. And the worst part is that there are obviously plans to turn this into a series that I will definitely be boycotting.

Jodi Picoult delivers the riveting tale of one small town's entanglement with high-school violence.

New York Superior Court Judge Alex Cormier is assigned to preside over the case of the alleged Sterling High School shooter. Lawyer Jordan McAffee represents Peter, the boy who, on the day of the shooting, was found in the corner of the gymnasium holding a gun to his head with a shaky hand. Detective Patrick DuCharme has one star witness, but her story keeps changing. And then there's the biggest problem of all: the star witness happens to be Judge Cormier's daughter.

This is a fantastic book that will give you insight into the minds of teens. Scary and honest, it makes you wonder who's at fault for this type of tragedy.
