"Great Narrator!!!"
I haven't read the print version, but I had already listened to the authors other audiobook, which was a disappointment. So, I was happily surprised after taking a chance with this book.
Quite simply, the narration. The story was different and the characters interesting. But the narrator Charles Carr is so very talented and engaging that he made everything better.
Charles Carr's performance is immediately engaging. His characterizations sound right, and he makes both the lovers accessible and empathetic. The love scenes are passionate and real.
Sender is a very likeable character with surprising depth. I couldn't help caring about his happiness. Even though we meet Elios first and are set up to see things through his perspective at first, Sender quickly became the one I cared about more. His character goes through more changes and therefore he gains more depth and real empathy.
I am VERY disappointed that there are no other books narrated by Charles Carr currently available at audible! Obviously, the narrator can make (or break) a book, especially in this particular genre. I hope more of this narrator's work becomes available soon.
"A Beautiful Regency Fairy Tale."
Easy to enjoy.
The thief was a very empathetic character, easy to care about.
The kitchen scene was a very satisfying and romantic resolution.
Yes.
Looking forward to the second and third books in the trilogy.
"Finally!!! It's past time!"
I had an old recording of Maurice on cassette many years ago and adored it. Finally, this intelligent and moving novel is available again at Audible, and I couldn't be more satisfied with this new recording.
Maurice is a very literate and thoroughly enjoyable novel concerning same-sex love among an intolerant and hypocritical society. The rather poetic descriptions of Maurice's inner life as he stumbles about in self-discovery are just as accurate and appropriate today as ever.
The scathing humor in Forster's more famous novels is properly not as apparent in Maurice, as its subject matter was obviously a more personal one for the author. The fact that the book wasn't published until after Forster's death lends a definite eloquence to the story. During his lifetime, the novel was shared only among his closest friends.
Peter Firth, a great actor, gives a measured performance that is perfectly suited to Forster's style. The romantic aspect of the story is that much more powerful because the narration is restrained. Forster is so honest and matter-of-fact, purposely dry because his subject is so very affecting.
"More Josephine Tey, please!"
I was very happy to see a Josephine Tey mystery made available on audio! And Derek Jacobi is a real treat to listen to! But, I do agree with an earlier reviewer who questioned the choice of this particular novel for a first audiobook. I can only hope that more Inspector Grant mysteries become available very soon!!
"James Marsters and Jim Butcher: A perfect match!!"
I'm very glad all of the Dresden Files novels finally have been published in audio!! James Marsters is better than ever in Blood Rites, very funny and quite convincing with all of the various characterizations. Blood Rites features some very satisfying character revelations; and I've come to really care about Harry and those he cares about.
"Can't get enough of Cadfael!!"
The BBC Radio adaptations of Ellis Peters' Cadfael mysteries make for great listening! The top-notch cast is very engaging and features exquisite narration by Michael Hordern. Philip Madoc as Cadfael is excellent, even for those of us who have enjoyed Derek Jacobi in the British TV series adaptations.
Though Monk's Hood is one of my favorites, I'm certainly hoping very much for more of the BBC Radio Cadfael mysteries to become available.
"Great Book. Fantastic Narrator. Engrossing Series."
The best so far of this great series, expertly narrated by Kate Reading (I was already a fan of hers from The Wheel of Time series). This fifth book was so generous and satisfying that by the end I feared for a moment that it was the final book. Of course that's not the case, and I'm really looking forward to First Lord's Fury, due to come out near the end of the year!
"Looking Forward to More!!!"
The Dune series is widely considered the greatest science-fiction adventure ever written. Having read the first book a few times, I'm very happy to see that they have produced an audiobook of Dune with several narrators. It's a satisfying compromise between one narrator and a full cast dramatization. I'm even happier that they seem to be producing the entire series. If they do I will be purchasing every volume.
"Wondrously entertaining!! Great cast!"
The production quality of the entire series is superb! The cast is perhaps the most well-appointed I've ever heard; every actor sounds perfect in his or her role! Lyra and Mrs. Coulter are particularly convincing and engaging!
This first volume will definitely leave you wanting to move on to the next right away.
