Don't toss out the cake and candles just yet. Philip Roth, who, among other notable achievements, changed the way Americans laugh about masturbation, celebrates his birthday on March 19th. Check out: I Married a Communist and Operation Shylock.

    "To complete the trilogy"
    Overall

I bought this to complete the Roth American Life trilogy (American Pastoral, The Human Stain). I loved the others, and like this book. I enjoyed Ron Silver's performance. The audio quality is truly awful, the worst I have heard from Audible, but I still thought it was worth the listen especially if you have read the other two books (though they are not thematically linked and each stands alone). Better audio quality would add the 4th star.

Although his father had been reluctant to become a field operative, Jack Ryan Jr. wants nothing more. Privately training with a seasoned Special Forces drill instructor, he’s honing his skills to transition his work within The Campus from intelligence analysis to hunting down and eliminating terrorists wherever he can—even as Jack Ryan Sr. campaigns for re-election as President of the United States. But what neither father nor son knows is that the political and the personal have just become equally dangerous.

Clancy uses this book for an undisguised rant about the politics of the Obama administration. He is entitled to his opinion, but he is not entitled to sell me his opinion as part of a guilty pleasure novel. It should have a warning label.

Tensions are rising in the Middle East. Iran’s president vows to annihilate the United States and Israel. Israel’s prime minister says someone must hit Iran’s nuclear sites “before it’s too late.” The American president warns against a preemptive strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities and says negotiations are the key to finding peace. And amid it all, rumors are swirling throughout the region of a mysterious religious cleric claiming to be the Islamic messiah.

Mike From Mesa says: "An almost perfect book, with one caveat"
"Offensive book with no ending (in sight)"
    Overall

The book begins with some interesting premises and characters, and devolves into a poisonous anti Muslim pro Jesus tract. To add insult to injury, the author has not even wrapped up the story and is probably positioning himself for another book. Don't expect to see me buying it.

Lee is a math professor at a second-tier university in the Midwest. When a mail bomb goes off in the office of the star computer scientist next door, Lee is slow to realize that students and colleagues have begun to suspect that he's the Brain Bomber, an elusive terrorist whose primary targets appear to be academic hotshots.

I found my self fully engaged in this novel from its very beginning. The writing is levels above the usual bland story-telling common to this genre.
