Nicholas Flamel was born in Paris on September 28, 1330. Nearly 700 years later, he is acknowledged as the greatest alchemist of his day. It is said that he discovered the secret of eternal life. The records show that he died in 1418. But his tomb is empty. The legend: Nicholas Flamel lives, but only because he has been making the elixir of life for centuries. And Sophie and Josh Newman are about to find themselves in the middle of the greatest legend of all time.

I enjoyed the book, but felt that it was geared more toward a younger reader (young adult/teenager). Perhaps that's because two of the major characters are themselves teenagers. I greatly preferred the George RR Martin "Song of Ice and Fire" series - which is definitely geared to adults, and I've preferred (so far) the John Twelve Hawkes "Traveler" series. The Alchemyst reads too much like a fairy tale (so far). I do plan to listen to the next one to see if my opinion changes.

In this fast-paced epic, best-selling historian and master storyteller Arthur Herman spotlights two giants of the 20th century. Gandhi & Churchill shows how their 40-year rivalry revolutionized India and the British Empire, paving the way for a new era. Gandhi championed India's independence, Churchill the British Empire.

This is a very well written history, which I have now listened to twice. I found it so compelling that I subsequently purchased the hard copy so I could read and annotate it. I read the book having already read much on Churchill (including Manchester's biographies) but I wasn't disappointed since this book really focuses primarily on India and Gandhi, but in a manner that also tracks Churchill's life and influence as well. This is truly one of the best audiobooks I've purchased from audible.

It is seven days before the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor. Days that are numbered for Sondegger, a Nazi spy captured in London while on a mission to take down the Twenty Committee, a German network of spies the British have turned.

    Overall

An enjoyable piece of history-based fiction that keeps you listening. The overall premise is a good one and there are a few surprises in store. Many of the more minor characters tend to be very one-dimensional and somewhat predictable. But overall it was a an enjoyable listen. The reader did a good job overall and a commendable job on most of the American accents, including that of the main character. If you want a book that has some suspense, some grounding in historical events, and a few twists and turns, you'll enjoy this.
