  • Citizen of the Galaxy

Citizen of the Galaxy takes place far in the future, when the human race has spread out to colonize other planets. In a slave market in the capital of Jubbul and the Nine Worlds, an auctioneer announces, "Lot 97. A boy." Slavery is commonplace in Jubbul, and the sight of the ragged, starving boy, Thorby, on the auction block is not unusual. What does puzzle bystanders and Thorby himself is his purchase by crippled Baslim, the beggar who sits every day in a corner of the marketplace.

"You must listen to this book!"

It's hard to believe this book was written in 1957. It still works today. The story is deep, entertaining, and even funny. Lloyd James is a great narrator, too. He really brought this well-written story to life.

I must admit, it's been a long time since I've read a true Sci Fi book, but after listening to this one, I've gotten back into the genre. You don't have to be a Sci Fi fan to enjoy this book, and this is one book that might turn you into one.

A vicious 15-year-old droog is the central character of this 1963 classic, a frightening fable about good and evil, and the meaning of human freedom. In Anthony Burgess' nightmare vision of the future, where the criminals take over after dark, the story is told by the central character, Alex, who talks in a brutal invented slang that brilliantly renders his and his friends' social pathology.

"Incredibly well read and written... A must read!"
    Overall

It's been several years since I read this book in both forms (U.S. and U.K. versions). Listening to this audiobook brings back memories of why I love it so much.

To begin with, it is incredibly well written, and of course is an excellent story... I consider this a must read. Our humble narrator (Tom Hollander) is absolutely perfect as Alex! His accent is perfect, and he does the other voices well, too. The way he blends the definitions of the made-up teen slang (Nadsat) is natural rather than disruptive. I don't think there could be a better narrator for this book. He roped me in and mesmerized me. I couldn't put my iPod down until it was finished (and I've read both versions of the book many times).

If you haven't read the book but have seen the movie, you should get this audiobook. The last chapter, omitted from the movie and the book's original U.S. release and for many years of reprints after, changes the book into a wonderful work of literature.

Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is a millionaire, a genuis, and, above all, a criminal mastermind. But even Artemis doesn't know what he's taken on when he kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit. These aren't the fairies of bedtime stories, they're dangerous! Full of unexpected twists and turns, Artemis Fowl is a riveting, magical adventure.

    "Great book, great narrator!"
    Overall

You can't go wrong with the Artemis Fowl series. It's a great series for kids and adults. Very funny, creative, and fun!

I read the books a while back and loved them. I've enjoyed listening to them just as much -- the narrator (Nathaniel Parker) is so great, I look for other things he's narrated.
