In the Pacific, as USS Walker is repaired and updated after a previous battle and Reddy is healing from his wounds, planning begins for a bold raid on the very heart of the Grik Empire. But time is running out for the Alliance army in India, and the Allied forces in the west must gather in an unprecedented land, air, and sea campaign to destroy the mighty Grik battle fleet and break through to their relief. All other plans go on hold when the attempt proves more difficult - and more heartbreakingly costly - than anyone imagined.

I listened to the first chapter and found that I could not go on. I liked the performance, but the prose was not to my liking at all.

The year is 1793, the eve of the Napoleonic Wars, and Horatio Hornblower, a 17-year-old boy unschooled in seafaring and the ways of seamen, is ordered to board a French merchant ship and take command of crew and cargo for the glory of England. Though not an unqualified success, this first naval adventure teaches the young midshipman enough to launch him on a series of increasingly glorious exploits.

OMG, as we say today. This is an amazing performance of as goo a book about the sea, as exists in the English language. If you love the ocean, naval history and wonderful voice don't pass on this one.

  • The Lawgiver: A Novel

At the center of The Lawgiver is Margo Solovei, a brilliant young writer-director who has rejected her rabbinical father’s strict Jewish upbringing to pursue a career in the arts. When an Australian multi-billionaire promises to finance a movie about Moses if the script meets certain standards, Margo does everything she can to land the job, including a reunion with her estranged first love, an influential lawyer with whom she still has unfinished business. Two other key characters in the novel are Herman Wouk himself and his wife of more than 60 years, Betty Sarah, who, almost against their will, find themselves entangled in the Moses movie .

    Story
Would you consider the audio edition of The Lawgiver to be better than the print version?

Yes. The narrators are perfect, and the text is written as snippets of emails, letters, journal entries, and conversatios, so that the story really lends itself to the audio format with a male and female narrator.

What other book might you compare The Lawgiver to and why?

Wouk is a genius at developing a female character (see Marjorie Morningstar and Natalie Jastrow), so any of his other novels stand up well with his latest.

What about Peter Riegert and Zosia Mamet ’s performance did you like?

Reigert makes one feel as if he is listening to Wouk himself, and Mamet does the women and each of them true justice. These are big female characters, and I had tears in my eyes after the epilogue. I'm a 64 year old man.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    No movie. Please.

    Any additional comments?

i have a neice who is a rabbi, and I can't wat for her to experience this book.

Her career in homicide has taken her into the darkest depths of New York City’s underground - and sometimes Lieutenant Eve Dallas feels more comfortable in those kinds of places than in the high-rise, high-society world of her billionaire husband, Roarke. But while she’s no party girl, she’s managing to have a reasonably good time at the celebrity-packed bash celebrating the debut of The Icove Agenda. This time it’s Eve, not Roarke, who’s a guest of honor, since the film is based on one of her famous cases. Her partner, Peabody, is practically giddy....

Amy Huber says: "Susan Ericksen is amazing!"

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If I could have gotten past the reader's irritating voices I might have actualy stuck with this story

What was most disappointing about J. D. Robb’s story?

Poor and unbelievable accents and intonatios of the reader

Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Ericksen’s performances?

    Never

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disgust

    Any additional comments?

Sorry that I wasted a free read on this one. The 4 1/2 stars posted with the title were way off.
