Set in the 1920s, The Glimpses of the Moon details the romantic misadventures of Nick Lansing and Susy Branch, a couple with the right connections but not much in the way of funds. They devise a shrewd bargain: they'll marry and spend a year or so sponging off their wealthy friends, honeymooning in their mansions and villas.

Not often does a book make me sit in my car in the parking lot, too engaged to turn off my ipod and get on with my life. More broadly written than some of Wharton's more famous books, satire and irony live more on the surface in Glimpses of the Moon than in Age of Innocence or House of Mirth. The erotic overtones of a marriage of financial convenience that turns into genuine passion are unmistakable, and the characters are keenly drawn. The themes of conflict between social climbing and deeper values are timeless. A good listen, for sure.

  • Tigers in the Snow

Author of At Play in the Fields of the Lord, national Book Award-winner Peter Matthiessen is an accomplished naturalist and one of the most acclaimed writers in the world. This book is a stirring look at the tiger, a magnificent animal that has long fueled human fascination. In critical danger of extinction, only a few thousand of these giant cats remain. Matthiessen's exquisite prose stunningly captures the tigers' dramatic fight to survive.

    Overall

Matthiessen is one of the great writers of the last 30 years. Far Tortuga, The Snow Leopard, At Play in the Fields of the Lord are all masterpieces. Unfortunately Tigers in the Snow is an eco-potboiler, rehashing familiar arguments for conservation and laments about endangered species without taking us anywhere new. The writing feels humdrum and its easily possible to find more strongly felt expressions about the environment. Skip this one.

  • Cowboys Full

    • ABRIDGED (7 hrs and 30 mins)

From James McManus, author of the best-selling Positively Fifth Street, comes the definitive story of the game that, more than any other, reflects who we are and how we operate. Cowboys Full is the story of poker, from its roots in China, the Middle East, and Europe to its ascent as a global - but especially an American - phenomenon.

What's interesting about poker? How about hands that play out in surprising ways, big personalities, shady characters, heartwarming generosity just when you least expect it, and the combination of camaraderie and cutthroat competition in poker rooms. Sadly, this book delivers too much incidental material about presidents who happened to play poker (without the animating effects of accounts of how the presidents played) and too little of the heart and soul of the game. A moderately interesting listen.
