When Harriet Vane attends her Oxford reunion, known as the "Gaudy", the prim academic setting is haunted by a rash of bizarre pranks: scrawled obscenities, burnt effigies, and poison-pen letters - including one that says, "Ask your boyfriend with the title if he likes arsenic in his soup." Some of the notes threaten murder and one of them involves a long Latin quotation, which makes Harriet suspect that the perpetrator is probably a member of the Senior Common Room. But which of the apparently rational, respectable dons could be committing such crazed acts?

Would you try another book from Dorothy L. Sayers and/or AudioGO Ltd?

This original adaptation of Gaudy Night is perfectly fine for a person whohas not read the book...but for anyone who has read it and loved it, this version isa sad disappointment. Unabridged versions of good books are ALWAYS a sorry experience...So much of the original story is not there, charactors are missing and their parts have been applied to other charactors. I would think the author would be quite angry.

What was most disappointing about Dorothy L. Sayers’s story?

Too much of the original story is missing in order to make the abridgement..

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably, but I ususally am disappointed by movies made from books I love.

Emory Emmerick comes to Balaclava Agricultural University as a scout for a television station. Although the faculty and students are hardly ready for prime time, Emmerick’s interest is in environmental programming - a subject that inspires even the driest Balaclava professor to wax poetic. In his search for material, Emmerick joins Peter Shandy and a few of his colleagues on the annual owl-count.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I had never read the paper version of this particular book, but after listening to this 'version' I was of the opinion that Audible had left off several chapters or that Ms. MacLeod had lost interest in the story and just stopped writing. The story was rather engaging but this version has a VERY unsatisfactory ending with too many strings left hanging. I was disappointed to not have anything finalized.

Would you be willing to try another book from Charlotte MacLeod? Why or why not?

I have read many other of Charlotte MacLeod's book and enjoyed most of them very much (with the exception of The Curse of the Giant Hogweed - such a dumb story), so I know that I will try other Charlotte MacLeod books.

Which character – as performed by John McLain – was your favorite?

John McLain is a good reader and performs all the characters quite well.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Possibly, but I have generally found that movies made from books I enjoyed are pretty awful. And if this version of this book were a movie I would demand my money back for the crumby ending.

    Any additional comments?

I hope that if Audible put out a more complete 'Unabridged' copy of the book, they will offer refunds to those of us that bought this version!!

  • The Unfinished Clue

The Unfinished Clue is a clever and humorous murder mystery set at a British country estate in the 1930s. There, each of the invited guests, along with the victim's wife and the estate's staff members (the butler, the maids, the gardener), had good reason to hate the arrogant and abrasive victim. Sir Arthur Billington-Smith had successfully alienated each and every one of them.

Would you listen to The Unfinished Clue again? Why?

The Unfinished Clue is another well-written book by Georgette Heyer and to listen again (and again) is an easy and comfortable thing to do...

Have you listened to any of Clifford Norgate’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Clifford Norgate is an excellent reader and differentiates the charactors very well. He is also an excellent reader of other Georgette Heyer mysteries: Envious Casca, They Found Him Dead, Duplicate Death.....all of which are not currently availalbe on Audible (but would be much appreciated).

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I don't much care for movies made from books.

    Any additional comments?

I hope Audible will include some of the other Georgette Heyer mysteries. All of her books have interesting charactors, excellent dialogue and fun plots.

    Story
    (106)

Resourceful, adventurous and utterly indefatigable, Sophy is hardly the mild-mannered girl that the Rivenhalls expect when they agree to take her in. Kind-hearted Aunt Lizzy is shocked; stern Cousin Charles and his humourless fiancée Eugenia are disapproving. With her inimitable mixture of exuberance and grace Sophy soon sets about endearing herself to her family, but finds herself increasingly drawn to her cousin. Can she really be falling in love with him, and he with her? And what of his betrothal to Eugenia?

What about Clare Wille’s performance did you like?

Clare Wille did a fine job of giving voices to the various charactors in the book.

Do you think The Grand Sophy needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Please release an unabridged version of the Grand Sophy. I bought this because I love the original story and could not resist, but it was a disappointment, not because of the reader, but because all the little nuances and some of the original story were left out. The author's original intent is lost in an unabridged book.

    Any additional comments?

Please release some of the Georgette Heyer Mysteries in unabridged form (Duplicate Death, Footsteps in the Dark, etc). Unabridged!!
