    Story

This isn't your typical vampire story. It's about I.O. who time travels back in time and meets a dark one (vampire). She had already met his children in the future. There's a lot of quirkiness, funny moments, a lot of mind talk about sex, some sex but not real descriptive. I.O. does get a little annoying at times the way she can babble on, but if you want a light listen then you might enjoy this book. It's not a dark book and except for a lot of talk about sex could have been a YA book.

The narrator could have done a little better on the male voices but wasn't too bad.

    Story

I seem to be in the minority reviewing this book, but it was just too much - too much violence, too much blood, too much swearing, too much killing, etc. I enjoyed the first book but not this one. I also have never read Princess of Mars so I wasn't able to get the parody others have talked about.

I didn't realize this was Christian fiction when I got the book. The story was good, I liked the characters but there were just too many references to God and whether you should believe in Him or not for me to really enjoy it.

But if that's what you enjoy when listening to books then you will probably enjoy this one.

    Story

If you're expecting a romance book, this isn't it. There is some romance but more toward the end. Jake and Sadie had had a close relationship in the past, but circumstances separated them. They fight their feelings through the majority of the book. There was one sex scene but it was pretty low key.

This was more about the mystery of who's going around killing people and what's being covered up. There were some flaws in the story, but this is fiction after all and not real life. The characters were well developed, including Amelia's multiple personality alternates.

There was also some violence but nothing too major.

The narrator did a terrific job.

    Story

This is the first book I've listened to in this series. I have to agree with some of the other reviewers that having to listen to recipes in the middle of the action is distracting. Even if the recipe sounds good there's not much you can do about writing it down if you're driving down the road. I've listened to other books like this where you can go on to the author's website and get the recipes. From this book you can get the Red Velvet Cupcake recipe off her website but that's the only one that I've been able to discover and that wasn't the one I was interested in.

If you're in the mood for a simple mystery book and like listening to recipes read out every time a recipe is mentioned every other chapter or so then you might enjoy this book.

The narrator was easy to listen to.

When Nina Linden is hired to landscape a private island off the New England coast, she sees it as her chance to rebuild her failing business after being cheated by her unscrupulous ex. She never expects that her new client, software mogul Deacon Whitney, would see more in her than just a talented gardener. Deacon has paid top dollar to the crews he’s hired to renovate the desolate Whitney estate - he had to, because the bumps, thumps, and unexplained sightings of ghostly figures in 19th-century dress are driving workers away faster than he can say “Boo”.

Vashti is the second most powerful vampire in the world, a lethal beauty who has left a path of devastation in her wake. Story

There was a little more action in this book than the first one in the series. I liked Elijah in the first book and also in this one,but I just couldn't get into him and Vashti as a couple. This is evidently a trilogy and from the research I did it sounds like it will be a while before the final one is available - seems she has to finish another series first for the same publisher, so you might want to wait before you start this trilogy otherwise you might be hanging for a while.

The narrator did an okay job but she needs to practice her male voices. She made Adrian sound kind of stilted.

This is mainly for young teens since the main characters are in their teens. While I like some YA books, this one had too many references to religion and faith than I usually like. Other than that it was a pretty good story, although I won't be continuing the series.

What would have made Influential Magic better?

Make the main character stop and think before jumping to so many wrong conclusions. She also used poor judgement and didn't seem to have any sense at all. She just wasn't a very likeable character to me.

Has Influential Magic turned you off from other books in this genre?

    No.

If you like books that drag with a lot of introspection and any action or something happening being far and few between then you'll like this book. I liked the two main characters but otherwise it was pretty boring except for a few snatches of action. Unfortunately this is one series I won't be continuing.

Narrator: Just because the words say someone whispered or something was said in a low voice doesn't mean you have to drop your voice so low the listener can't hear what you're saying unless there is no other noise around, which unfortunately doesn't happen when you're driving down the road and have the volume turned up as high as you can and you still can't hear what's being said. Occasionally I could get my volume up high enough to hear what was being whispered, but then I'd have to hurry and turn it down again once she got back to a normal voice. After a while I didn't bother.
