"good but not great"
story-wise there are a few too many leaps of faith. well narrated. decent listen but not a great listen. 3.5 stars.
"a big "but...""
this book is entertaining enough that you will likely finish it. however, it is a tale of greed and moral corruption, including the authors. brabazon is not really a journalist, at least not in the sense that he is an objective reporter of the truth. instead, he is a journalist only in that he carried a camera and filmed some war footage. brabazon is really a thrill seeker easily influenced by those around him. this book is essentially his justification for agreeing to participate in a coup d' etat motivated solely by greed.
"best narrated book in the history of book audio"
i find it surprising that this book does not have a 5 star average. yes 4.4 is very good but this is a near perfect audio book. this is without a doubt the best narrated audio book i've listened to. additionally its a great great story. cant imagine anyone would be disappointed with this novel.
"3.5 stars"
this is not a 5 star book. aspects of the writing are great, the dialogue between the help is very very good. however, this book suffers from a flaw: that a smart, sensitive, insightful person is also unbelievably naive. also, as some have mentioned, the change in the narrator in part 3 is pretty off putting.
"pretty inspiring"
wow, what a story! great listen! went thru this book pretty quickly... its a study of fortitude and the human spirit. the torrence tornado has had an amazing life.
"excellent"
an outstanding epic surrounding the war on drugs. well narrated, great story, believable characters - highly recommended.
"great"
good stuff in a pulp fiction kind of way. reminds me of elmore leonard but a little lighter.
"narration"
this might be the worst narration i've heard. its actually a fairly decent book and an interesting topic but i cant tolerate the narration. please take a sample listen before you purchase this book.
"bryson's dud"
for the record: i really like bill bryson, he's one of the few novelists thats made me laugh out loud. however, this is his least entertaining effort. it was just okay enough to keep me listening on long drives but for me, utterly forgettable. a lot of trivia, dreary england, bad people and little inspiration.
"not up to par"
i thought connelly really misfired here. everything was over explained. bosch lost his mystique and was really one dimensional. no great plot twists... just not much here. the worst of the bosch series.
