In 1851 a mysterious visitor to Art Mumby's space home has plans for a calamity that will destroy not only the entire British Empire, but also the known universe. Can disaster be prevented with help from Art's irritating sister Myrtle, a few exotic space creatures, and an extraterrestrial pirate?

"Great Adventure Story for the family"
    Overall

With two chidren 4 years apart and one of each, finding a book to please them both is difficult. We listen to audio in the car. We enjoyed listening to this book so much, we didn't want to get out of the car. Great adventure and creative characters. Not crazy about the narrator, but we even requested the author make it an animated feature.

After the Great War that divided the peoples, the kingdoms of men plunged into a Dark Age that lasted 500 years. To heal the lands and restore the light, the great kings decreed that magic and all that is magical, be it creature, man, or device, shall be cleansed to dust. The cleansing raged for so long that no human could recall a time without it and it is in this time that the Dark Lord Sathar returned from the dark beyond.

Will says: "Excellent -- one of the best!"
    "Horrible Narrator"
    Overall

Huge waste of money, cannot get past the narrator's monotone cadence to follow the story. After concentrating really hard on the words, I believe the story to be great. But, we could not sit through more than a few chapters before we were disgusted. I think I will try it in paperback. Don't buy this narrator's work. He is terrible.

When Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon decide to spy on a presentation her uncle, the commanding Lord Asriel, is making to the elders of Jordan College they have no idea that they will become witnesses to an attempted murder, and even less that they are taking the first steps in a journey that will lead them into danger and adventure unlike anything Lyra's unfettered imagination has conjured up.

    Arnold says: "A Terrific Book"
    "NOT for Christian Children"
    Overall

Although this is an exciting adventure novel with great characters, it will leave your family wanting to read the rest of the series. The second book reveals the author's hatred of Christianity a bit. The third book shows clearly the author's intent in writing these books. Christian parents, beware of starting this series.

In this stunning sequel to The Golden Compass, the intrepid Lyra finds herself in a shimmering, haunted otherworld, Cittagazze, where soul-eating Specters stalk the streets and wingbeats of distant angels sound against the sky. But she is not without allies: twelve-year-old Will Parry, fleeing for his life after taking another's, has also stumbled into this strange new realm.

Geoffrey says: "The second book in a fantastic trilogy!"
    "NOT meant for Christians"
    Overall

This is the second book in the series and the author's beliefs begin to be known. Christian parents should not allow their children to read.
