All the official reports say they are dead—extinct since the late ’80s, when a fed named Arkeley nailed the last vampire in a fight that nearly killed him. But Arkeley knows what most people don’t: there is one left. In an abandoned asylum she is rotting, plotting, and biding her time in a way that only the undead can. When state trooper Laura Caxton calls the FBI looking for help in the middle of the night, it is Arkeley who gets the assignment.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based upon a real weapon - the Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP) - which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States.

The author did not do his research. While modern diesels are mostly electronic, hundreds of thousands of pieces of existing diesel construction equipment, older diesel pickups, delivery trucks, heavy trucks and diesel tractors require NO electronics to run. My 2011 kubota diesel is NOT electronic. Yet his premise is no power to run generators, dig graves, transportation of any kind, except 50 year old cars. Has he ever heard of a bicycle? His town could requisition home heating oil from community and have tens of thousands of gallons of fuel to drive generators. The worst thing is Newt Gingrich tied himself to this fantasy,( and he wanted to be president). I finally gave up this book after the execution of the looter. Apparently even though our hero was a colonel, he had no idea how to perform an execution.(guess he never watched Gunsmoke or a war movie). I could go on and on about what is wrong with this tripe, but it has already wasted too much of my time. I hope I saved somebody else the waste of time this book offers.
