Why we think it’s a great listen: It’s easy to say that when it comes to sci-fi you either love it or you hate it. But with Ender’s Game, it seems to be you either love it or you love it.... The war with the Buggers has been raging for a hundred years, and the quest for the perfect general has been underway for almost as long. Enter Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the result of decades of genetic experimentation.

What made the experience of listening to Ender's Game the most enjoyable?

I really loved the narration of this book. The narrator did a great job of giving each character their own voice & engaging the listener in the story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It's hard to choose just one. Each character adds their own element to the story.

    Which scene was your favorite?

I don't want to spoil the story for anyone.

    Any additional comments?

I missed reading this classic as a kid growing up. I always heard about it but never read it. I figured "what am I waiting for?" so I picked up a copy on Audible. I'm glad I did. Even as a 30 year old female, I enjoyed listening to the story & imagining that I was Ender. It's obviously written for a younger audience but this classic absolutely blows the current drivel for young audiences out of the water. If you missed this one as a kid, listen now-- you won't regret it!

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams. Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society--from van Gogh’s sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I didn't dislike the topic of the book (obviously, I did choose to purchase the book) but the narrator was a bore. Perhaps someone who enjoys something lulling them to sleep with their voice while they're trying to listen to a book?

Would you ever listen to anything by Susan Cain again?

No. I found her voice too low & soothing. Not a great choice for a narrator of an audiobook.

How could the performance have been better?

Too dry. I was interested in the topic but the narration bored me & made it hard to focus & want to continue on. I only got through about half of the book by the time I gave up. I got the point & didn't need to listen more.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Quiet?

Seemed too long. By the end of part one I understood the arguments in the book & was not enticed to start the second half.

    Any additional comments?

Perhaps this is one of those books that is better read on your own than an audioboook. I think the topic has merit & is interesting I just didn't like the delivery of the audiobook itself.

North Korea is isolated and hungry, bankrupt and belligerent. It is also armed with nuclear weapons. Between 150,000 and 200,000 people are being held in its political prison camps, which have existed twice as long as Stalin’s Soviet gulags and twelve times as long as the Nazi concentration camps. Very few born and raised in these camps have escaped - but Shin Dong-hyuk did.

What did you love best about Escape from Camp 14?

Out of this world story. I cannot believe it's true. Stories like this are why I prefer non-fiction over fiction.

Would you be willing to try another one of Blaine Harden’s performances?

I don't know. Mostly he was fine but once I realized it sounded like 2 people were reading it in the middle of sentences, it became difficult to listen without distraction. It seemed as if they went back in later & re stated portions of sentences. Therefore volume & inflection can vary in a single sentence. It's not terribly often but once I noticed it, it drove me a little nutty. If you haven't listened yet, try to forget I mentioned this. The story is incredible & this quirk is easily overlooked.

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of 30 million souls, to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet.

Yes. The story is strange but thought provoking. I enjoyed the story & look forward to seeing how the movie compares since I think it would be hard to follow the book beyond a loose framework.

All decent parents want to do what's best for their children. What Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother reveals is that the Chinese just have a totally different idea of how to do that. Western parents try to respect their children's individuality, encouraging them to pursue their true passions and providing a nurturing environment. The Chinese believe that the best way to protect your children is by preparing them for the future and arming them with skills, strong work habits, and inner confidence.

Maybe. Depends on the topic. The story was good but it was a little rote. I guess that goes with the theme of the book though.

Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update," before "Sarah Palin," Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told....

I loved this audiobook. I'd listen to it again especially if I had a long drive coming up.

What did you like best about this story?

Tina's stories are great & you feel like you're getting a "behind the scenes" on everything you've seen her in on tv.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Absolutely

    Any additional comments?

Give this book a try. You'll be glad you did.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to be better than the print version?

YES YES YES. I tried to read this book initially & just couldn't get into it. I think the large number of characters & Swedish names of people & places made it confusing for me to sink into the story line. My mom read the book & highly recommended it so I thought I'd give the audiobook a try. I'm so glad I did. It was much easier to get into & the narrator is engaging.

Would you consider the audio edition of Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) to be better than the print version?

Yes. When the comedian can read their own book to you, I feel the experience is much more enhanced!

What did you like best about this story?

It's honest & funny. Comedians always embellish but it's fun to listen to the stories & struggles especially when it's done in a humorous fashion.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes!

    Any additional comments?

Listen to this book. It's great. I listened to it while driving a long distance & was so glad to have Mindy along for the ride to entertain me.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Would you listen to Water for Elephants again? Why?

Maybe after a couple of years I would. I would certainly recommend the book though.

What other book might you compare Water for Elephants to and why?

Not really sure. I don't tend to listen to a lot of fiction so I can't compare it to much else.

Have you listened to any of David LeDoux and John Randolph Jones ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No but I enjoyed the story & performance.

    Any additional comments?

Great story with colorful characters. It's not as much of a "love" story as I expected but that is perfectly ok. I felt the characters were very dynamic & relateable despite the story being set in a time long ago.

Anyone who saw an episode of Saturday Night Live between 1999 and 2006 knows Rachel Dratch. She was hilarious! So what happened to her? After a misbegotten part as Jenna on the pilot of 30 Rock, Dratch was only getting offered roles as "Lesbians. Secretaries. Sometimes secretaries who are lesbians." Her career at a low point, Dratch suddenly had time for yoga, dog- sitting, learning Spanish - and dating. After all, what did a forty-something single woman living in New York have to lose?

What did you love best about Girl Walks into a Bar...?

The honesty in the book is great. Rachel Dratch has a self depreciating style that doesn't make you feel bad for her or question her confidence. She also answers a question I had been wondering...."What have you been doing since SNL?"

What other book might you compare Girl Walks into a Bar... to and why?

Tina Fey's Bossypants. Rachel talks about Tina in the book & they're friends.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Phone calls from her agent reenacted.

    Any additional comments?

I listened to this book on the train & had to keep myself from cracking up out loud. At times I had to pause the book so I could enjoy a good laugh without missing anything!
