Bilbo Baggins, a gentle hobbit who loves the comforts of home, reluctantly joins a company of dwarves on a journey to recover plundered gold from a fierce dragon. It's a tale of high adventure and astonishing courage, and a magical prelude to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

  • Wool: Silo, #1; Wool, #1-5

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 43 mins)
    • By Hugh Howey
    • Narrated By Amanda Sayle
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In a ruined and toxic landscape, a community exists in a giant silo underground, hundreds of stories deep. There, men and women live in a society full of regulations they believe are meant to protect them. Sheriff Holston, who has unwaveringly upheld the silo’s rules for years, unexpectedly breaks the greatest taboo of all: He asks to go outside.

Michael G. Kurilla says: "Post-apocalyptic life in a silo"
"Awesome story! Narration needs to grow on you."

I had heard about Hugh Howey's WOOL and decided to buy it. I'll be honest, it took a while for me to get used to Amanda's voice but I think she does a good job. She's more suited for female character narration but I guess I should have expected that she wouldn't be able to convey male voices well. Not many female narrators can. Once I was accustom to her inflections, I listened happily along.

The story is fantastic. Howey is a great story teller. Howey unfolds the events in WOOL masterfully. Suspense, shock, horror are all conveyed well as you listen. You will feel like you are right there, inside the silo, living among its inhabitants.

Pick this up. Do it now! You won't regret it.

  • 14

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 38 mins)
    • By Peter Clines
    • Narrated By Ray Porter
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

    Charles says: "Completely Engaging"
"The Twilight Zone meets Lovecraft meets Scooby-Doo"

14 is an excellent mystery-thriller with a splash of horror and humor. Peter Clines develops the characters well and you become attached to the players as they explore and uncover their apartment building's secrets. I mention Scooby-Doo in the title of my review because you will feel like your tagging along with the "Mystery Gang" in trying to solve the riddles but trust me, this story is way more cunning and twisted and not as simple as unmasking Mr. Jenkins, the janitor, as the cause of the disturbances. I found 14 intelligent and thought provoking and a thrilling story with crazy twists and a very satisfying ending.

Ray Porter does an excellent job narrating. My only gripe is with his narration of female voices but that might be asking much. I still give the narration 5 stars.

If you like mystery and intrigue, mixed with a splash of horror and some comedy, you will love 14. I highly recommend it!

BTW, 450 S Kenmore Ave is the building that inspired the story. Look it up to get a visual in your head of the building as you listen to the book.

  • The Martian

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 53 mins)
    • By Andy Weir
    • Narrated By R. C. Bray
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first. But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?"

Michael G. Kurilla says: "Macgyver on Mars"
    "Really, really good!"
Would you listen to The Martian again? Why?

I would listen to it again for the technical information.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Martian?

Lots of parts were great. The humorous parts were great. Its a believable story that makes you feel like your there, surviving the ordeal with Mark.

What does R. C. Bray bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Excellent narration. I loved Ray's accents and story telling. Very good.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Not really. Its all good.

    Any additional comments?

I highly recommend this audio book. Its awesome for space/science nerds like me.
