In his final hours in the Oval Office, the outgoing President grants a controversial last-minute pardon to Joel Backman, a notorious Washington power broker who has spent the last six years hidden away in a federal prison. What no one knows is that the President issues the pardon only after receiving enormous pressure from the CIA. It seems Backman, in his power broker heyday, may have obtained secrets that compromise the world's most sophisticated satellite surveillance system.

    "A Good Book"
    Overall

This is a good book. The main character is wonderful, and the story is a great description of Italy. You begin to understand the main character and understand his frustrations. The unabridged book is slow at times, but is still very good. I am sure the abridged book is wonderful, but I have not heard/read it - - yet.

Troy Phelan is a self-made billionaire, one of the richest men in the United States. He is also eccentric, reclusive, confined to a wheelchair, and looking for a way to die. His potential heirs, to no one's surprise - especially Troy's - are circling like vultures. But Troy shocks them all when he leaves his fortune to an estranged, illegitimate daughter.

This is a fabulous book. The descriptions of the surroundings, the relation to human struggles, and the out of the ordinary locations - this is a wonderful book. Yes, it is "uplifiting," but not in an overly religious way. There are so many ups and downs to this book; so many descriptions to human nature - good, bad, and ugly - we all know people like the ones encountered in this book, and hope that we never meet others! I love this book, and I will listen to it again!
