Bonnie and Clyde, they thought. And what's-his-name, the sidekick. Three teenagers with dead-end lives, and chips on their shoulders, and guns. The first person they killed was a highway patrolman. The second was a woman during a robbery. Then, hell, why not keep on going? As their crime spree cuts a swath through rural Minnesota, some of it captured on the killers' cell phones and sent to a local television station, Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigator Virgil Flowers joins the growing army of cops trying to run them down.

The night after the fourth of July, Layton Carlson, Jr., of Red Wing, Minnesota, finally got lucky. And unlucky.

He’d picked the perfect spot to lose his virginity to his girlfriend, an abandoned farmyard in the middle of cornfields: nice, private, and quiet. The only problem was...something smelled bad - like, really bad. He mentioned it to a county deputy he knew, and when the cop took a look, he found a body stuffed down a cistern. And then another, and another. By the time Lucas Davenport was called in, the police were up to 15 bodies and counting.

Ed says: "Sandford and Ferrone deliver"

What did you love best about Field of Prey?

    Lucas on the chase!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Lucas is the right combination of hard nose detective, with just a little bit of " the end justifies the means", and human foibles thrown in. Also enjoy Lettie; Jenkins & Shrake; Weather; RoseMarie; and the governor. Actually - I love all of Mr Sandford's characters.

What about Richard Ferrone’s performance did you like?

I am not a fan of Mr Ferrone as narrator of Mr Sandford' s books. I prefer Eric Conger's narrations. Mr Conger sounds more like "Minnesota" to me

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I enjoy Lucas being a parent and the added dimensions that gives him

    Any additional comments?

Waiting for the next one. Will probably purchase the written book instead of the audiobook if Mr Ferrone is the narrator.

In Southeast Minnesota, down on the Mississippi, a school board meeting is coming to an end. The board chairman announces that the rest of the meeting will be closed, due to personnel issues. "Issues" is correct. The proposal up for a vote before them is whether to authorize the killing of a local reporter. The vote is four to one in favor.

What made the experience of listening to Deadline: Virgil Flowers, Book 8 the most enjoyable?

The story is riveting and entertaining. I love the characters Mr Sandford creates, both main & supporting characters. Virgil is my favorite, with Lucas a very close second. The narrator , Eric Conger, is the only person who could read the Virgil books in my opinion. He IS the voice of Virgil.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes! couldn't wait to listen to more, however I wanted to savor the story and make it last. Virgil had 3 crimes to solve in one story!

Have you listened to any of Eric Conger’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to any other of Mr Conger's narrations, but I plan to search for some. I love listening to him. When I think of Virgil Flowers - I think of Mr Conger's voice. He does an awesome job of the Minnesota "tone"

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I chuckled several times and had a tear once when the dogs were found

    Any additional comments?

Loved the book and narration. Enjoyed immensely. Sad that I have to wait a whole year for another Virgil book. Knowing that a Lucas book comes out in the spring helps to ease the long wait.

What made the experience of listening to Command Authority the most enjoyable?

The story line kept me engaged. I didn't want to quit listening. Lou Diamond Phillips is a gifted narrator

What other book might you compare Command Authority to and why?

I love all of the Tom Clancy Books. I have enjoyed the incoropration of Jack Jr, as a key character,

What about Lou Diamond Phillips’s performance did you like?

Lou Diamond Phillips is an excellent narrator. His command of accents is amazing. The story is riveting, and Mr Phillips helped me keep the characters straight, just by his voice alone.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes!

    Any additional comments?

Mr Clancy & Mr Phillips - keep them coming!

New York Times best-selling author James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels began with this first hard-hitting entry in the series. In The Neon Rain, Detective Robicheaux fishes a prostitute's corpse from a New Orleans bayou and finds that no one, not even the law, cares about a dead hooker.

    S. Sand says: "The perfect combination of author and narrator"
"Awesome book and expertly read by Will Patton"
    Overall

I enjoyed this audiobook ENORMOUSLY. The writing is engaging and colorful and I loved Will Patton's narration. I think I could listen to anything Will Patton reads- he does an excellent interpretation. I will be listening to the entire series.
