Imagine how different your life would be if you could tell whether someone was lying or telling you the truth. Be it hiring a new employee, investing in a financial interest, speaking with your child about drugs, confronting your significant other about suspected infidelity, or even dating someone new, having the ability to unmask a lie can have far-reaching and even life-altering consequences. As former CIA officers, Philip Houston, Michael Floyd, and Susan Carnicero are among the world’s best at recognizing deceptive behavior.

What did you learn from Spy the Lie that you would use in your daily life?

A great reference on reading people and their comfort level. They don't tell you who's not telling the truth, but they'll teach you when a response is inconsistent with your expectations, indicating you should do a little more work (ask more questions) in that area.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

The title and synopsis did nothing for me, but all the talk and hype encouraged me to give it a try. Let's hear it for peer pressure!!!
This is a riveting story that let's you proceed confidentially, thinking you're on solid ground, then it pulls the carpet from beneath your feet. Characters are likable; even lovable. Characters are hatable; even detestable.
The characters are rich and deep. The story is entertaining...emotional...infuriating!! This is not only a terrific story, but a text book on society's most dangerous pathologies. Make time ... Don't miss this one!

Six shots. Five dead. One heartland city thrown into a state of terror. But within hours the cops have it solved: a slam-dunk case. Except for one thing. The accused man says: "You got the wrong guy". Then he says: "Get Reacher for me". And sure enough, from the world he lives in - no phone, no address, no commitments - ex-military investigator Jack Reacher is coming. In Lee Child's astonishing thriller, Reacher's arrival will change everything - about a case that isn't what it seems, about lives tangled in baffling ways, about a killer who missed one shot - and by doing so gives Jack Reacher one shot at the truth.

Same stuff, different title. Reacher's about as subtle as an atomic bomb, and the story's as deep as an infant's bath water - to be fair, this one's fairly deep. If you like Reacher books, you'll like this one. If you've never listened to one, but like thrillers and action, give it a shot.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

I bought this one during a "books your parents would love" promotion. Being a veteran, red-blooded American, and history nerd, I enjoy good WWII action. This was SO MUCH MORE. World War II fighting, patriotism, survival, faith, conflict, ... it's exhausting, but like a good workout, it's so worth it. I've pushed this onto all of my friends, and they've all thanked me. It is not something they would have picked on their own, and they all owe me!!

There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

I put this one on my wish list because I felt like Audible was pushing it down my throat. The title didn't grab me. Neither did the synopsis. Finally, I gave it a shot. I'm SO glad I did !! The characters are diverse and rich. The twists are many, often, and extreme. I'm stingy with a "5,' but this one's worth it !!

But just as his wife's illness grows worse, duty calls Sarek away, once again sowing the seeds of conflict between father and son. Yet soon Sarek and Spock must put aside their differences and work together to foil a far-reaching plot to destroy the Federation, a plot that Sarek has seen in the making for nearly his entire career.

Definitely worth it if you're a Star Trek fan. It takes place just after Star Trek V (Kirk and Bones escape the Klingon prison planet, the crew show up just to foil the assassination of the Chancellor, etc). It ties much of the political upheaval that must have occurred afterwards into an interesting story. The narrator does a great job of taking you back to the original characters with inflections and pace. Strongly recommend!!! I am stingy with a "5," and this one's a strong B.

I do like the Jack Reacher books, I just don't find them "challenging." Lee Childs develops the story well, but always overlooks what ultimately becomes the cause of the problem. I listen to these stories when listening may not get all of my attention. It's no biggie if I miss parts of the book...I usually have them figured out halfway through anyway. I will buy more, and if you like the genre, you should definitely give this one a shot.

How an Economy Grows and Why it Crashes uses illustration, humor, and accessible storytelling to explain complex topics of economic growth and monetary systems. In it, economic expert and bestselling author of Crash Proof, Peter Schiff teams up with his brother Andrew to apply their signature "take no prisoners" logic to expose the glaring fallacies that have become so ingrained in our country's economic conversation.

The narrator tells a great story - this story or any other he reads. He contributes to the simplicity of the writing to make this very complicated topic both entertaining and easy to learn. I'm not sure if the authors (who narrated this book) have a future in narration, but they certainly made this a quick and easy lesson for me, as well as gave me an entertaining story.
I've made given a "5" very special, but this is a strong B+.

In the near future, at a moment no one will notice, all the dazzling technology that runs our world will unite and turn against us. Taking on the persona of a shy human boy, a childlike but massively powerful artificial intelligence known as Archos comes online and assumes control over the global network of machines that regulate everything from transportation to utilities, defense and communication. In the months leading up to this, sporadic glitches are noticed by a handful of unconnected humans - a single mother, a lonely Japanese bachelor, and an isolated U.S. soldier....

It just never got going. I could see this as a good movie, but as a book, I never got into the characters. They just didn't develop. You don't know what caused the "robopocolypse," or what spurred the revolt. The narrator didn't help, but would do a great job reading to kids at bedtime - if you wanted the kids to fall asleep.

The anchor of The O'Reilly Factor recounts one of the most dramatic stories in American history—how one gunshot changed the country forever. In the spring of 1865, the bloody saga of America's Civil War finally comes to an end after a series of increasingly harrowing battles. President Abraham Lincoln's generous terms for Robert E. Lee's surrender are devised to fulfill Lincoln's dream of healing a divided nation. But one man and his band of murderous accomplices are not appeased....

It's not like we don't know the ending...yet we're still on the edge of our seats

This is a tremendous study in US history, and a gripping recount of the last days of the Civil War. Bill O'Reilly's narration adds to the drama, as well as our overall understanding of the events. He does a great job of uncovering possible mysteries, still representing them properly.

In recommending this to others, the biggest objection is the author. Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard represent themselves and the facts proudly and without bias.
