Yes, because the plot catches the reader in the beginning, and by the time it becomes predictable, the reader is intrigued enough by the characters to find out how it ends.
Not one of my favorite authors.
An average mystery, not thrilling; easy to put down then pick up again
Yes - the entire series!
I like them all, but I think Peabody is my favorite! Her background is so complex, plus the way the character is developing just charms the listener.
Susan Ericksen is one of my favorite narrators. Her interpretation of the characters in this series, though, is exceptional.
Nothing extreme, just didn't want to put it down.
Great series by a prolific and talented author whose books I always anticipate and buy.
This is always a difficult question because I've listened to so many over the years. The plot line here is unique and the narration is well done; I'll list it in the top fifty.
I'd probably compare it to early Harlan Coben because of the plot twists, but unlike Harlan Coben's books, I guessed where this plot was going. It was well executed, though, so I don't want to disrespect the author or the effect.
She created an audible personality for each of the characters. I was never "lost" as to which character was speaking.
It definitely kept me interested and following along with the story. I certainly didn't laugh or cry, but I wanted to throttle a couple of the characters.
Overall, an excellent novel - just not a GREAT one.
The characters', especially Pendergast's, development. The plot was average, and didn't keep me riveted.
Not as good as Relic, and DEFINITELY not as good as Still Life With Crows (my favorite). Probably ranks about fifth in the series.
He's very good, but other narrators like Dick Hill and Scott Brick are industry standard (in my humble opinion).
On average, I didn't waste my money, but I've enjoyed other books in the series better.
ALL THE AUDIOBOOKS?!? I've been listening to audiobooks for years, so it's difficult to actually rank a book unless it's in a specific category. I would say that this ranks in the top 50 that I've read in the last twelve months.
When the reader realizes what the malevolent creature that is perpetrating the crimes actually is!
When the mother and son come together and recite the nursery rhymes! Chilling!!
Not necessarily, but I could have done so.
LOVE Scott Brick!!!!
Didn't like to see my hero, Pendergast, "die".
When the Count gets his comeuppance.
LOVE Scott Brick!
books I have ever "read"!! I can't believe that there is actually an author out there today that can construct a plot with well developed characters that can hold one's attention!! I'll be looking for more books by Kate Morton!!!
Vivian - because she has such strength.
Brings a capitivating story line completely to life, allows the terrific plot twists to "grab" the listener unexpectedly; enhances an already enticing dialogue through narration that doesn't draw attention to the narrator but to the characters themselves. GREAT JOB!!!
Sorry, but this is a dumb question; I wouldn't - the title is perfect!
All in all, one of the very best of the best!
A narrow minded twenty-something.
The opening scene murder
I would have rejected it for publishing
The author has good plot ideas but needs to go to character development school. The characters are naive, immature, and shallow.
The plot was predictable and not thought through, the characters shallow, stupid, and unrealistic! As a brain tumor survivor, I will attest to the fact that if one had a golf-ball-sized malignant tumor "deep inside the brain in between the ears", one would NOT HAVE BEEN CAPABLE of carrying out the deeds attributed to the real killer - no matter how psycho. Also, as a Texan I resent the illusion the author created of 1930's small town "justice" in 1999-2007 Texas. A waste of money but not of time - after I met the "defense" and its entourage, I skipped to the PREDICTABLE killing of the hapless Drum then to the end. The author must have needed a new Mercedes or 10 to have written such garbage!!!
