  • Mal de Amores [Lovesick] (Texto Completo)

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 24 mins)
    • By Angeles Mastretta
    • Narrated By Adriana Sananes

    "It is not for me"

I am an Anglo teaching high school Spanish. I listen to audio books for enjoyment and to improve my Spanish.
This book was not to my liking for two reasons:
    1. The reader went too fast for me to follow.
    2. What I did understand was not my kind of book. It is a romance novel set before and during the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920. I am a 62 year old man, and was hoping for more history, not romance.

  • Island Beneath the Sea: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (17 hrs and 58 mins)
    • By Isabel Allende
    • Narrated By S. Epatha Merkerson
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Born a slave on the island of Saint-Domingue, Zarit - known as Tt - is the daughter of an African mother she never knew and one of the white sailors who brought her into bondage. Though her childhood is one of brutality and fear, Tt finds solace in the traditional rhythms of African drums and in the voodoo loas she discovers through her fellow slaves.

Madelaine says: "good story, ok narration"
    "Outstanding! Typical Isabel Allende."
What did you love best about Island Beneath the Sea?

Historically plausible, in this case meaning brutal.

What other book might you compare Island Beneath the Sea to and why?

Another of her books, Zorro. But Zorro had a lot of light-hearted chapters, whereas there is nothing light-hearted about the treatment of Haitian slaves by the French in the 1700's.

  • En el Tiempo de las Mariposas [In the Time of the Butterflies]

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 38 mins)
    • By Julia Alvarez
    • Narrated By Rosie Berrido

On a deserted mountain road in the Dominican Republic in 1960, three young women from a pious Catholic family were assassinated after visiting their husbands, who had been jailed as suspected rebel leaders. The Mirabal sisters, thus martyred, became mythical figures in their country, where they are known as Las Mariposas (the butterflies).

    Silent_Chic says: "Great...Amazing"
    "Life under the dictator Trujillo"

This family lived during the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. This story is about the daily lives of these sisters from teen-age into their 30's. As an Anglo, I find this a real insight into Latino life under a dictator, an interesting story well told.

  • Cajas de Carton

    • UNABRIDGED (3 hrs and 30 mins)
    • By Francisco Jimenez
    • Narrated By Adrian Vargas

Beautifully and authentically rendered by actor and playwright Adrian Vargas, these twelve stories tell of the almost unendurable journey most migrant campesinos undertake to find the "American Dream."

Dan says: "It touched my heart"
    "It touched my heart"

I'm an Anglo who teaches high school Spanish in a suburb of Houston. I listen to these stories for entertainment and to improve my Spanish.
This story was written in very comprehensible Spanish and read by a good reader. Most important, the story was sensational! I could visualize the two boys waving to the train conductor. I could imagine the family's anguish when the baby got sick. It was a very touching story. I listened to it twice.

  • Morir en el Intento: La Peor Tragedia de Inmigrantes en la Historia de los Estados Unidos (Version Integra)

    • UNABRIDGED (4 hrs and 22 mins)
    • By Jorge Ramos
    • Narrated By Jorge Ramos

    M says: "Very Sad"
    "Well-written documentary"

I live in Houston TX, and I remember the stories of the deaths of the illegal aliens in the airtight van of an 18-wheeler. Ramos did a good job of investigating and writing this story. The reader did a good job of speaking clearly enough that I (a high school Spanish teacher) could understand. I listened to the whole story twice.

  • Jerusalen: Caballo de Troya (Dramatizada) [Jerusalem: The Trojan Horse, Book 1 (Dramatized)]

    • ABRIDGED (9 hrs and 15 mins)
    • By J.J. Benitez
    • Narrated By Studio Fono Libro

    "As?, as?, regular"

The essence of the novel is that a NASA astronaut made a trip back in time to witness Jesus' last two weeks of life. The Spanish was near the upper limit of my comprehension (I am an Anglo who teaches high school Spanish), so it improved my Spanish. The story was not very plausible, but interesting anyway.
