I am an Anglo teaching high school Spanish. I listen to audio books for enjoyment and to improve my Spanish.
This book was not to my liking for two reasons:
1. The reader went too fast for me to follow.
2. What I did understand was not my kind of book. It is a romance novel set before and during the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920. I am a 62 year old man, and was hoping for more history, not romance.
Historically plausible, in this case meaning brutal.
Another of her books, Zorro. But Zorro had a lot of light-hearted chapters, whereas there is nothing light-hearted about the treatment of Haitian slaves by the French in the 1700's.
How can a how-to sex manual be boring? But this one is.
This family lived during the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo. This story is about the daily lives of these sisters from teen-age into their 30's. As an Anglo, I find this a real insight into Latino life under a dictator, an interesting story well told.
I'm an Anglo who teaches high school Spanish in a suburb of Houston. I listen to these stories for entertainment and to improve my Spanish.
This story was written in very comprehensible Spanish and read by a good reader. Most important, the story was sensational! I could visualize the two boys waving to the train conductor. I could imagine the family's anguish when the baby got sick. It was a very touching story. I listened to it twice.
I live in Houston TX, and I remember the stories of the deaths of the illegal aliens in the airtight van of an 18-wheeler. Ramos did a good job of investigating and writing this story. The reader did a good job of speaking clearly enough that I (a high school Spanish teacher) could understand. I listened to the whole story twice.
The essence of the novel is that a NASA astronaut made a trip back in time to witness Jesus' last two weeks of life. The Spanish was near the upper limit of my comprehension (I am an Anglo who teaches high school Spanish), so it improved my Spanish. The story was not very plausible, but interesting anyway.
