  • No Defense: A Barbara Holloway Novel

    Story

Barbara Holloway is a trial lawyer who tends to take on difficult cases, but this time it seems there's no defense at all. It appears that Vinny Jessup died when his car rolled over on a bad curve on Lookout Mountain. Then the sheriff finds the gunshot wound. With a large insurance policy as her motive, could his much younger wife have staged the death?

    Kay M says: "Terrific Plot"
    "slow defense"
    Overall

I really tried to like this book but the reader had a slightly whiny voice and the story progress was very very slow. The focus on characters and small events like dinner parties as a prelude to any action or advance in the plot took so long that I gave up hope there would ever be a trial or any other action.

  • Pieces of My Heart: A Life

    Story
    (8)

Robert J. Wagner has starred in more than 100 films and television series over the past 50 years. In this deeply personal story, he recalls his rise to stardom. He talks candidly about his relationships with some of the greatest stars of the 20th century, including Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbara Stanwyck, and, for the first time, he shares the details of his two marriages to Natalie Wood. Wagner also offers a fascinating look at Hollywood during the last half of the 20th century.

Chris says: "Wagner's life, told in a gracious manner"
    "Heart to Heart"
    Overall

There were few downbeat moments in R.J. Wagner's life story reading. His voice seems as young and vigorous as ever and he has many interesting things to relate about his 60 years of interacting with Hollywood's famous, from caddying for Clark Gable to his television years in Hart to Hart. There is more to his life than his marriages to and loss of Natalie Wood.

  • Break No Bones

The inspiration for the hit Fox series Bones, Kathy Reichs explores another high-stakes crime from today's headlines, in a case that lands forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan in the middle of a gruesome international scheme.

    Meridith says: "Unbearable Narrator"
    "narrator accent"
    Overall

This book is the usual excellent story from Reichs but the narration distracts from full enjoyment, as Ms. Berryman has a slight French accent. The style of narration varies enough to have made me question whether there was one or two narrators. Sometimes Ms. Berryman was too breathy, almost whispering, sometimes lacking vocal warmth, while other sections flowed informally. However, the southern accents were very well done. Since this book was set in Carolina rather than Quebec, a narrator with French language skills wasn't as necessary. Other audio versions of Temperance Brennan have had narrators (3 different ladies)who could handle French, but had American accents in the US segments.

With The Pieces of the Puzzle, Robert Stanek masterfully creates an intelligent thriller that weaves the excitement and intrigue of a sophisticated mystery with the fascinating secret world of international espionage. The leader of a special operations unit returns home after a mission gone terribly wrong to find himself a wanted man.

    Debra says: "Made me think"
    "narration is important"
    Overall

Based on glowing reviews I downloaded this book and started to listen, but found it impossible to continue because the narration sounds as if computer generated. The cadence was so robotic and emotionless it interfered with listening to the story, which many reviewers say is wonderful, but one reviewer posted a warning I should have heeded.

    Story

On the morning of September 11, 2001, two men meet in a smoky stairwell of the World Trade Center. One is Eric Michaels, a driven financial manager from Los Angeles who has been busy climbing the corporate ladder, often at the expense of his wife and young son. The other is Jake Bryan, a New York City fireman devoted to his wife and daughter. In the midst of the crisis, Eric falls on the stairs and Jake stops to help him up. The two men freeze momentarily, stunned by the uncanny resemblance between them.

    ANN says: "What a concept!"
    "Not a thriller"
    Overall

Nowhere in the description of this book does it mention the particularly strong Christian content. Those readers who prefer a strongly religous book would probably like to know this about it, and those who thought it was more of an action book might be disappointed at the slow development and sometimes repetitive writing.
