It seems like an easy assignment for an assertive but sweet woman like Gracie Snow: track down her friend, Bobby Denton, a famous ex-jock, and bring him to Heaven (Texas, that is) to shoot a movie. How could he refuse a glamorous offer like that? Easy....

It’s seven years after the events of Sideways. Miles has written a novel that has been made into a wildly successful movie, and the movie has changed his life. Jack, contrarily, is divorced, has a kid, and is on the skids. Phyllis, Miles’ mom, has suffered a stroke that’s left her wheelchair-bound and wasting away in assisted living. She desperately wants to live with her sister in Wisconsin. When Miles gets invited to be master of ceremonies at the International Pinot Festival in Oregon, he hatches a harebrained road trip.

I don't think you necessarily need to have seen the movie Sideways or read the book to easily get into this novel. Miles is about as flawed a hero as possible in this novel. There is plenty of madcap adventures and redemptive moments. Pickett does a great job of bringing the auxiliary characters to life. Scott Brick is probably my new favorite narrator, he really brings Miles and the other characters to life.

Not everyone will love this book, a lot of people are going to be put off by all the excessive drinking and the promiscuous sex. Not to mention there are several places in the book where Miles is downright unlikable and it is hard to have sympathy for him. He is not the best of heroes but in the end he does become heroic. For me if you enjoyed the movie Sideways then you definitely need to get this book.

Great book, a lot of practical advice. I would recommend this to my friends. I regularly read self-help books but this one is better than most. I will probably listen to it a few times.

Mitch Horowitz presents a meticulously researched, compulsively readable history of the mystical and spiritual experience in our country. Focusing on the impact that the 19-century movements of Freemasonry, Spiritualism, and transcendentalism have had on America, Horowitz portrays a colorful cast of characters as he explains the origins of the Ouija board, the political influence of Spiritualism on the Senate, and the source of the mysterious slogan on the back of the dollar bill.

It is an interesting subject. However I am not sure I learned very much from this book. I am not sure I can cover how mysticism shape our nation after listening to it.

Would you try another book from Robyn Carr and/or Therese Plummer?

I choose this book because I love all things California Costal area and Red Wood trees.
The book is really just a formula romance novel. Not as bad as some but not particularly great either.

Would you ever listen to anything by Robyn Carr again?

    doubtful

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Probably not, the narration was fine.

You didn???t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    a solid formula romance.

Although much is now known about the brain, relatively little has been determined about where consciousness comes from. Dr. Diane Powell, a Johns Hopkins-trained neuroscientist, has brilliantly reassessed the meaning and nature of consciousness by exploring research on the workings of psychic phenomena.

I am almost done with listing to this the second time. This book explains so much about what we call psychic phenomenon. There has been a tremendous amount of research on the subject over the years. This research was performed in top universities and by the US government.

  • Wild at Heart: Radical Teachings of the Christian Mystics

Is an intimate experience of the Divine meant only for saints and mystics? Ask Tessa Bielecki, a former Carmelite nun and abbess of a monastic community, and the answer is an emphatic no. "Mystical experience is as natural to us as breathing," she explains. "It erupts spontaneously and graciously when we live on the spot and savor the real." Wild at Heart presents her call to you, the ordinary seeker, to have a loving realization of God, which is your divine birthright.

Vincent Brown says: "A Perfect Fit"
"One book that makes a difference"
    Overall

For me this book was very meaningful. I loved how she called all of us to be Christian Mystics. Honestly, if you just select one book for spiritual enrichment - this would be a good one to choose.

This book might have low ratings with some listners because it is not chock full of bible facts but more geared toward spiritual enrichment. It talks alot about the different saints of the past. For me it was precious.
